Wario is an short, heavyweight character with a surprising good air game and a good amount of recovery options. In Wario's transition from Brawl to SSB4, he was received a mix of buffs and nerfs, with the most notable one being his amazing air speed and acceleration which rivaled that of Jigglypuff's has been slightly reduced. Wario's air game was toned down even further with his some of his aerials being less reliable, such as his down and up air. To compensate for this, however, Wario was given a better ground game, such as greatly improved smash attacks and some of his attacks dealing more knockback. His special moves have also been improved. His Corkscrew gains more vertical distance and can sweet spot the edge. His Chomp now being one of the best command grabs in the grab, can cover standard ledge get-ups, negates certain attacks such as Kong Cyclone and projectiles as some of them heal him and slightly increase the charge of his Wario Waft, has deceptively long range, and has almost no startup or ending lag. Wario Bike now has hitboxes even after Wario dismounts it, respawns almost immediately if destroyed or if off screen, ending a wheelie deals more damage and incredible knockback, and deals more damage if thrown. Wario Waft while dealing drastically less damage, has been given more knockback at full charge, now making it one of his best KO moves.

Wario received a mix of buffs and nerfs in the transition from Brawl to Super Smash Bros. 4. While his aerial speed and acceleration has been slightly reduced, he has been given multiple improvements to his recovery options to compensate. Many of his moves have extended lag, but deliver much more knockback, such as his new forward smash. Wario's ground game has been improved, with many of his attacks having less start-up lag and the Wario Bike being much stronger and more reliable, although with the bike's inability to break into projectiles, this alters Wario's approach options. Once dismounted, the Wario Bike is now equipped with travelling hitboxes, granting Wario an armored projectile of sorts. Wario's enhanced air game has been re-balanced, with his up and down aerials being less reliable and his forward and back aerials delivering increased knockback. Wario's notorious grab release that plagued him in Brawl has been fixed in patch 1.0.4. Aside from Wario's fixed grab release, Wario has only received very minor buffs in the game's recent patches.
