Rosalina & Luma Launch into Battle!
—Introduction Tagline

Rosalina (ロゼッタ, Rosetta), known on the website and in-game as Rosalina & Luma (ロゼッタ&チコ, Rosetta & Chiko), is a newcomer for Super Smash Bros. 4. She was announced on December 18th, 2013 during a Nintendo Direct, which coincided with her reveal in Mario Kart 8. Rosalina is the first newcomer announced after E3 2013, as well as the first new Mario representative since Super Smash Bros. Melee. She is voiced by Laura Faye Smith.

A Luma (チコ, Chiko) is a star-shaped species somewhat similar to Toad that is under the care of Rosalina. It affectionately refers to her as its "mother". It works with Rosalina similarly to the Ice Climbers and Olimar.

Attributes

Rosalina is confirmed to be a lightweight character despite her tall frame, similar to Mewtwo and Zelda. Unlike the Ice Climbers or Olimar, Rosalina is not completely handicapped when a Luma is incapacitated and has her own move set independent from the Lumas. A Luma has its own attacks as well that it'll unleash when directional input is applied or automatically when close to an opponent as well.

  • Creation of Lumas which aid in attacks similar to Nana of the Ice Climbers. Lumas can attack while either next to or projected away from Rosalina, using a moveset (detailed below) connected with Rosalina's moveset. Lumas can be used to combo opponents back and forth with Rosalina, and like Pikmin can take attacks and be destroyed.
    • Luma re-spawns with Rosalina after 8 seconds.
    • Luma does not respond to inputs that involve using a held Item.
  • Her air dodge, sidestepping, and rolling animations involve her disappearing and appearing in another place (except for her sidestep, in which she just disappears, but reappears on the same place).
  • Rosalina can crawl.

Rosalina's design in the game is slightly more realistic than her appearance in the Mario universe, similar to Peach's. Her proportions are based upon her appearances in the Super Mario Galaxy series and her light blue gown is as well, although with new star-shaped aesthetics.

Moveset

Ground attacks

Normal

  • Neutral attack - Swings her wand twice, then waves it in front of her. Finishes with one more swipe.
    • Luma: Punches once, kicks once, then spins in place. Finishes with a headbutt.
  • Dash attack - Rams the enemy with her body
    • Luma: Performs a ramming attack
  • Forward tilt - Sweep kicks in front of herself
    • Luma: Performs a similar sweep kick
  • Up tilt - Floats straight up, headdbutting. A Saturnian ring rises up from her head.
    • Luma: Headbutts straights up
  • Down tilt - Dropkicks along the ground
    • Luma: Headbutts at a downward angle

Smash attacks

  • Forward smash - Thrusts her hands forward, hitting the enemy with a magical blast.
    • Luma: Delivers a powerful straight punch
  • Up smash - Swings her wand above herself while leaning far back.
    • Luma: Performs a rising uppercut
  • Down smash - Kicks in front of and behind herself, creating magic galaxies with each kick
    • Luma: Kicks on either side of itself

Aerial attacks

  • Neutral aerial - Spins in the air, creating a starry field at the end of her feet that damages enemies
    • Luma: Kicks forward, then back
  • Forward aerial - Flip kicks, generating a spiral galaxy in front of herself.
    • Luma: Spins in the air
  • Back aerial - Kicks behind herself, generating a spiral galaxy at the end of her foot
    • Luma: Kicks straight back
  • Up aerial - Waves her wand, making a Saturnian ring rise above her head
  • Down aerial - Stomps, sending a Saturnian ring below herself
    • Luma: Punches straight down

Grabs and throws

  • Pummel - Smacks the enemy with her wand
  • Forward throw - Makes the enemy float in front of her, then Luma punches the enemy away as Rosalina gestures with her wand
  • Back throw - Spins the enemy around her body once, then tosses them behind herself with magic
  • Up throw - Luma uppercuts the grabbed enemy into the air
  • Down throw - Magically slams the enemy into the ground

Special Moves:

  • Neutral special - Luma Shot: Rosalina charges the Luma and then shoots it forward as a projectile. When Luma is distanced, Rosalina will instead summon it back to her with a wave of her wand.
  • Side special - Star Bits: The Luma spins its body and causes Star Bits to be released in front of it. This attack can be used when the Luma is distanced from Rosalina.
  • Up special - Launch Star (ギャラクシージャンプ, Galaxy Jump): Rosalina uses a Launch Star to propel herself long distances.
  • Down special - Gravitational Pull (アイテムキャプチャー, Item Capture): a Star Cursor traces around Rosalina. This move causes projectiles to fly over her head. If the projectile is an item, it will be deactivated and available for her own use. Items idle on the ground will also be pulled towards Rosalina.
Special Move Basic Custom 1 Custom 2
Neutral Special Luma Shot Luma Warp Strong Shot
Side Special Star Bits Drifting Star Bit Speedy Star Bit
Up Special Launch Star High Launch Star Jump Star Attack
Down Special Gravitational Pull Catch & Release Guardian Luma

Final Smash

  • Power Star: Rosalina produces a massive Power Star. It is similar to Jigglypuff's final smash Puff Up, but with several key differences. Rosalina and Luma do not remain stationary during the attack and can move independently, and with the attack's small range it is almost necessary for Rosalina to throw opponents into the Power Star's path. The Power Star itself grows in size and produces small shooting stars as projectiles.

Taunts

  • Waves her wand up, similarly to when she summons a Luma; Luma dances around
  • Puts her hand on her hip, leans back, waves her wand and says Mmm Hmm; Luma nods its head
  • Rosalina and Luma lean forward and spin, like a planet on its axis

On-Screen Appearance

Rosalina and Luma enter the battlefield through a cloud of galactic dust. Upon entry, it is shown that the dust was from Rosalina's wand.

Victory Fanfare

A slight remix of the orchestrated tune that plays upon collecting a Power Star in Super Mario Galaxy. Alternatively, this same tune will play when one first accesses Super Mario Galaxy on its title screen.

Trivia

  • A Luma and Mega Man are the only characters in the game to have unique KO animations once having passed the blast-line. Luma's is small, and appears as a burst of colorful stars.
  • In the Smash Bros. Direct released in April, the end sequence featured a little section for each character revealed up until that point. Rosalina's section is the only section to not feature new footage (it was instead taken from her reveal trailer).
  • At E3 2014, Rosalina was the only newcomer not available on both demo versions.
