-I've never heard of it ever being called 'Cannon Sword'. The term 'Dolphin Gun' however, appeared in official documents. It was a nod to the codename of the Gamecube, namely 'Dolphin'. Other N64 games that appeared in the final stages of the N64's lifespan also made little references to the 'Dolphin' like this, like Donkey Kong 64.
