I have a bit on an issue. I have noticed the increasing number of users who are saying things like "Jesus Christ" or "For Christ's sake!". I am sure there are people out there who would really find this offensive to their religion. Is there anyway we can stop people talking like this? It is almost like racist language to some people I know. :We can't stop people from cursing, which some people find offensive. Even racism, which is near universally offensive, is generally something that admins shouldn't get involved in. Unless it is so clearly over the top that it would just be wrong not to delete it, then we should probably leave it.
:Have you ever heard any jokes about how Jews are cheap? How Mexican people are lazy? How all Muslims are terrorists? How Chinese people can't drive well? How blondes are dumb? Have you ever ''laughed'' at a joke like that? It's unrealistic to expect people to change their system of speech/humor simply because it offends you. In the back of their mind, they're probably even vaguely aware that what they say could possibly cause offense. But you have to remember: they're probably not doing it just to make you mad.
:General rule of thumb is that censorship is bad. Unless there is something so horrible that it's unethical to leave it up, it probably doesn't need to be censored. To those of you who are offended by such popular remarks, I say: welcome to the internet. If that honestly and truly offends you, then you obviously haven't been to encyclopedia dramatica's 'offended' article (and if you haven't, I highly recommend you never, ever go there). It is unrealistic to expect people to stop using casual remarks they hear and use all the time IRL- especially when you factor in the fact that on sites such as these, religion and such are often something of a community joke.
:tl;dr version: This is the internet, where you need a tough skin to survive. While you are certainly able to ask people to stop using comments that offend you, you are not welcome to do it while threatening them with a banstick. Most requests we make as administrators get taken as a command. "Can you please tag your images with the correct licensing when you upload them" often translates to "Tag your images when you upload or we'll ban you." That's not the way it should work, but that's how it does- and we have to account for that. So asking such a thing as an administrator is basically making a policy "SmashWiki:Don't use God's name in vain", and we shouldn't do that. We're the administrators of SmashWiki, not [http://conservapedia.com Conservapedia]- comments like and such as these don't need censorship here, especially when they are so borderline offensive to begin with. --<span style="font-family:vivaldi; font-size:12pt">[[User:Shadowcrest|<span style="color:#4682b4">Shadow</span>]][[User talk:Shadowcrest|<span style="color:#4682b4;">crest</span>]]</span> 21:59, 18 February 2009 (UTC) |
