Spear Pillar (テンガンざん やりのはしら, Mt. Tengan Spear Pillar) is a stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Stage layout

Spear Pillar consists of an upper solid platform with two overhanging soft platforms at the sides, which move up and down almost constantly, and a cave in the lower part.

After a short while from the beginning of a match, Dialga, Palkia, or Cresselia will show up in the background of the stage. Which Pokémon will appear is determined by the tint of the stage. If it is tinted blue, Dialga or Cresselia will appear. If it is tinted purple, Palkia will appear. The Pokémon will perform different attacks when they appear:

Dialga

  • Slows down the passage of time using Roar of Time. This stacks with effects such as the Timer.
  • Roars, then jumps onto the stage and attacks nearby characters with Roar of Time. There is a larger delay between the roar and jumping on to the stage than there is for other roar-signified attacks.

Palkia

  • Halves gravity (warps space) by using Spacial Rend.
  • Mirrors the stage (so that pressing right causes a character to appear to move to the left).
  • Rotates the stage at a 180 degree angle (so that gravity faces up and left is right).

Dialga and Palkia

  • Breaks the center third of the upper level creating a hole in the floor.
  • Breaks an outer third of the upper level trimming a side a bit short.
  • Tilts the stage at up to a 30 degree angle (the effect is only visual; flat surfaces don't become slopes, for example).
  • Shoots a vertical Hyper Beam covering a third of the stage (it can be shielded).
  • Shoots a horizontal Hyper Beam covering the lower level (again, can be shielded).

Cresselia

CresseliaSpearPillar.jpg
  • Throws a series of Psycho Cuts across the stage in straight lines from its position.
  • Throws a single Psycho Cut that swoops across either the upper or lower in a boomerang-like fashion.

All

After a while, the legendary Pokémon will vanish in a puff of smoke, leaving the brawl to continue normally for a short time. Soon enough, it will return exactly the same as before. Only one Pokémon can appear per match.

Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit, other legendary Pokémon, also make occasional appearances, only floating in the background and having no concrete effect on the fight.

Tournament Legality

This stage is universally banned in mainstream tournaments due to the highly disruptive effect of the Pokémon's attacks - especially Palkia's which alter the players' controls - which activate randomly and suddenly. The bottom cavern of the stage also acts as a large cave of life, prolonging matches and promoting stalling. The overall stage design with the separated top and bottom areas can allow for circle camping as well.

Origin

Spear Pillar as it originally appeared in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

This stage is based on Spear Pillar from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, which is situated at the peak of Mt. Coronet, where the two legendary Pokémon Palkia and Dialga are located. Team Galactic, a criminal organization which operates in Sinnoh, travels to Spear Pillar and awaken Dialga/Palkia, bound by a crystalline Red Chain created from the lake guardians (Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf) in order to destroy the world and create a new universe where Cyrus, the Galactic Boss, is deity and king. The player character travels up to Spear Pillar, where they impede Team Galactic's plan to control the legendary Pokémon by defeating their boss. Upon defeat, Team Galactic retreats and the player has the chance to defeat or capture Dialga/Palkia. High above the Spear Pillar is the Hall of Origin, where the omnipotent mythical Pokémon Arceus resides.

Trivia

  • Despite appearing on this stage, in the Pokémon games Cresselia has no connection to Spear Pillar at all.
  • If Olimar uses his Final Smash when the stage is turned upside down, the Bulborbs still appear at the bottom of the screen.
  • The cave underneath the main platform strongly resembles the Sinnoh Underground, with crystals partially burrowed in the floor and walls like in the Underground.
  • When the stage is rotated or mirrored, even the pause screen is affected by the switch.
  • If the camera is moved so it is possible to look near the back of the stage, what looks like a meteorite can be seen sitting near a tree.
  • If the player pauses the game and zooms in on the vertically moving platforms, the platform on the left shows a hieroglyphic drawing of Dialga, with Giratina and Palkia on the other side.
  • Palkia would later become a Poké Ball Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. 4, using Spacial Rend to a similar effect as Spacial Rend on this stage.
