===Technicals===
Two years after the [[2020 Super Smash Bros. sexual misconduct allegations]], YouTuber Technicals joined Double Down 2022 as a spectator, with a sign and the phrase "Ban [[Nairo]]" written on it throughout the tournament. After the conclusion to the grand finals of ''Ultimate'' and during ProtoBanham's celebration, Technicals would go on to pull up the sign in front of cameras and the audience in reference to the aforementioned controversy.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/abeflorida/status/1546391381387755520|title=Abe w Kingdom Hearts 1 on Twitter}}</ref> Technicals was subsequently escorted out of the venue by tournament staff, <ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/Technicals_/status/1546397155216175105|title=Technicals_ on Twitter}}</ref> and his actions and attendance in the tournament has led to both backlash and confusion by many in the Smash community, especially in regards to how he had been able to enter the venue despite being banned from all tournaments. This action was later censored in a VOD rediffusion of Double Down 2022.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/jayred_fgc/status/1546618833032515587|title=Jared Emerson on Twitter}}</ref>

After being barred from reentry during the second day of the event, he would sneak into the venue with a disguise.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YivT2CYWhbI|title=Technical's video on the situation}}</ref> After the conclusion to the grand finals of ''Ultimate'' and during ProtoBanham's celebration, Technicals would go on to pull up the sign in front of cameras and the audience in reference to the aforementioned controversy.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/abeflorida/status/1546391381387755520|title=Abe w Kingdom Hearts 1 on Twitter}}</ref> Technicals was subsequently escorted out of the venue by tournament staff, <ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/Technicals_/status/1546397155216175105|title=Technicals_ on Twitter}}</ref> and his actions and attendance in the tournament has led to both backlash and confusion by many in the Smash community, especially in regards to how he had been able to enter the venue despite being on the then Global Ban Database. On October 31, 2022, Technicals would make a video that addresses the controversy.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFBjrSpeiUE|title=Exposing the Corruption in the Smash Community}}</ref> In the video, he claims that the reason he went to the event in the first place was to protest the Global Ban Database and the fact that he is in it, but Nairo, who admits to receiving oral sex from a 15-year-old {{Sm|CaptainZack}} while he was 20, was not. He claims the reason for his ban after the second day was due to the "Ban Nairo" sign being considered "too political" by the TOs, and for being on the Global Ban Database. On the third day, he disguised himself in women's clothing and was able to enter due to a complete lack of security presence at the time.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://twitter.com/jifour98_/status/1640378250122887168?s=20|title=GimR's response to Double Down's security problems}}</ref> He then got into a verbal altercation with {{Sm|GimR}} and {{Sm|Aposl}}, which he secretly recorded. During the incident, he asks why Nairo is frequently allowed to re-stream [[VGBC]] content. GimR deflects by saying they do not associate with Nairo. After some more back and forth, the recording ends with Aposl taking the sign and Technicals being escorted out.

Double Down 2022 was a supermajor which took place on July 8th-10th, 2022 at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and featured tournaments for both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It was the sequel to Royal Flush and was previously set to be the first Platinum tier stop on the 2020 Smash World Tour for both games on June 5th-7th, 2020 prior to its postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic; the tournament was instead a Platinum stop on the Smash World Tour 2022 for both games. It was later planned for March 25th-27th, 2022 before being postponed again due to problems that arose due to the Omicron variant.[1] Various side events, a Rock Paper Scissors tournament, a Mario Party Superstars minigames bracket, Rivals of Aether brackets, and a Super Mario 64 16 Star speedrun contest also took place. An Ultimate Squad Strike bracket was planned before the tournament's first postponement.

Controversies[edit]

Hungrybox[edit]

Prior to playing his Top 12 match on the 3rd day of the tournament, Hungrybox tweeted that he was coughing blood but tested negative for COVID-19. Despite his condition, Hungrybox played and won his match against SFAT to make it to Top 8 before DQing himself out of the tournament for safety reasons. Hungrybox received significant negative backlash for allowing himself to compete despite being ill and for not wearing a mask, potentially exposing many attendees to his infection. The TOs also received backlash for allowing Hungrybox to compete and not penalizing him for not wearing a mask. Hungrybox later issued an apology and promised to wear a mask at all future events.[3]

Technicals[edit]

Two years after the 2020 Super Smash Bros. sexual misconduct allegations, YouTuber Technicals joined Double Down 2022 as a spectator, with a sign and the phrase "Ban Nairo" written on it throughout the tournament. After being barred from reentry during the second day of the event, he would sneak into the venue with a disguise.[4] After the conclusion to the grand finals of Ultimate and during ProtoBanham's celebration, Technicals would go on to pull up the sign in front of cameras and the audience in reference to the aforementioned controversy.[5] Technicals was subsequently escorted out of the venue by tournament staff, [6] and his actions and attendance in the tournament has led to both backlash and confusion by many in the Smash community, especially in regards to how he had been able to enter the venue despite being on the then Global Ban Database. This action was later censored in a VOD rediffusion of Double Down 2022.[7]

On October 31, 2022, Technicals would make a video that addresses the controversy.[8] In the video, he claims that the reason he went to the event in the first place was to protest the Global Ban Database and the fact that he is in it, but Nairo, who admits to receiving oral sex from a 15-year-old CaptainZack while he was 20, was not. He claims the reason for his ban after the second day was due to the "Ban Nairo" sign being considered "too political" by the TOs, and for being on the Global Ban Database. On the third day, he disguised himself in women's clothing and was able to enter due to a complete lack of security presence at the time.[9] He then got into a verbal altercation with GimR and Aposl, which he secretly recorded. During the incident, he asks why Nairo is frequently allowed to re-stream VGBC content. GimR deflects by saying they do not associate with Nairo. After some more back and forth, the recording ends with Aposl taking the sign and Technicals being escorted out.

Trivia[edit]

  • In reference to being held at a casino, like its predecessor, the tournament is named after a player option in the game Blackjack.
  • Junebug made Top 16 in both Melee singles and doubles, yet also DQ'd from both brackets for separate reasons. For doubles, he and his teammate (Shakedrizzle) DQ'd due to a conflict with Junebug's commentary schedule, graciously giving Peanut and Dutch (the opponents that they had just beat to make it into Top 16) the win and finishing 17th on paper.[10] The following day, Junebug voluntarily ended his own impressive run as solo Dr. Mario at 13th by DQ'ing against SFAT in order to attend a magic show.[11]
  • This tournament marks:
    • The first time S2J has defeated Hungrybox in an offline Melee tournament set.
    • ProtoBanham's first North American Ultimate major win.
  • After being upset in pools by frawg, Dabuz went on an impressive 11-set run in Loser's bracket to ultimately finish 4th.
