Controversy
Controversy
The event has received criticism for its numerous complications. Before the start of the Melee event, Hungrybox was reseeded from 2nd to 5th due to a finger injury sustained prior to the event, resulting in the three best players at the event - him, Armada, and Mango - being placed on the same side of the bracket, leading to heavy controversy. In addition, the start of the Melee Smash Draft was delayed for several hours, while many players such as Armada, Ice, and Leffen decided to drop out of the side event, lowering its overall level of competition. At one point, power was cut off for the area of the venue designated for Smash 4, while Melee players continued playing. The venue suffered from a frequent loss of Wi-Fi greatly affecting the stream and the other two days of the tournament had their own delayed schedules as well. Unlike many supermajors of 2016, GENESIS 4 was criticized for lacking a side stream for both games, leaving many losers' bracket sets unrecorded.

Another controversy was in regard to the forwiiu round 2 singles pools, in which the tournament organizers made mistakes concerning some matches, such as ESAM being pitted against Ito instead of DSS and Earth against 6WX instead of .

Perhaps most notably, it was discovered that the losers' eighths set between komorikiri and CaptainZack, as well as the set between ZeRo and Dabuz, were both played with a launch rate of 0.9. While it remains unclear how the launch rate was changed, many players argue that the competitive integrity of the event has been ruined due to the unusual circumstances of the matches. The tournament organizers have faced criticism for failing to check the setups earlier to ensure the proper ruleset, and for forcing komorikiri and CaptainZack to only replay the final game of the set, instead of replaying the entirety of both sets. Furthermore, disgruntled viewers of the tournament would later go on to express their anger about the incident by referring to the tournament as "GENESIS 3.9", and making numerous attacks towards the TOs. In addition to this, viewers also aimed their attacks towards VGBootCamp's upload of the match between komorikiri and CaptainZack, resulting in a comment response from GimR, in which he requested that users "not spam dislike the video", as it negatively affected their channel. Dr. Z justified that by stating that, by starting a game, the player accepted the result of the previous one. The TOs also claimed that the set between Dabuz and ZeRo was played with the correct settings, but it was later proven that it was not the case . Dabuz later made a TwitLonger asking for the reimbursement of his and komorikiri's travel fees. This request was satisfied as the TOs promised to allow Dabuz and komorikiri to attend a future major tournament of their choice with all expenses covered.
The TOs also claimed that the set between Dabuz and ZeRo was played with the correct settings, but it was later proven that it was not the case. Dabuz later made a TwitLonger asking for the reimbursement of his and komorikiri's travel fees. This request was satisfied as the TOs promised to allow Dabuz and komorikiri to attend a future major tournament of their choice with all expenses covered.

Controversy[edit]

The event has received criticism for its numerous complications. Before the start of the Melee event, Hungrybox was reseeded from 2nd to 5th due to a finger injury sustained prior to the event, resulting in the three best players at the event - him, Armada, and Mango - being placed on the same side of the bracket, leading to heavy controversy. In addition, the start of the Melee Smash Draft was delayed for several hours, while many players such as Armada, Ice, and Leffen decided to drop out of the side event, lowering its overall level of competition. At one point, power was cut off for the area of the venue designated for Smash 4, while Melee players continued playing.[1] The venue suffered from a frequent loss of Wi-Fi greatly affecting the stream and the other two days of the tournament had their own delayed schedules as well. Unlike many supermajors of 2016, GENESIS 4 was criticized for lacking a side stream for both games, leaving many losers' bracket sets unrecorded.

Another controversy was in regard to the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U round 2 singles pools, in which the tournament organizers made mistakes concerning some matches, such as ESAM being pitted against Ito instead of DSS[2] and Earth against 6WX instead of SS.[3]

Dr. Z justified that by stating that, by starting a game, the player accepted the result of the previous one.[4] The TOs also claimed that the set between Dabuz and ZeRo was played with the correct settings,[5] but it was later proven that it was not the case.[6] Dabuz later made a TwitLonger asking for the reimbursement of his and komorikiri's travel fees.[7] This request was satisfied as the TOs promised to allow Dabuz and komorikiri to attend a future major tournament of their choice with all expenses covered.[8]
