Most of the special stages "fly" through space, or have a cosmic background.  In ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'',  [[Battlefield (SSBM)|Battlefield]] and [[Final Destination (SSBM)|Final Destination]]  are dubbed under the category "Special Stages" and are the only stages from the game in that category. In ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'' the [[Battlefield]] and [[Final Destination]] stages return, presumably under the same category as before.
