The game takes place in the fictional region of Sinnoh, where the player assumes control of Dawn or Lucas, and their main objective is to collect eight gym badges, thus qualifying for the Sinnoh Pokémon League. This installment introduces a new sinister organization gang named Team Galactic. The mascot of the ''Diamond'' version is [[Dialga]], who is the "Master of Time" while the mascot of the ''Pearl'' version is [[Palkia]], who is also known as the "Master of Space."

In terms of playable characters, the fourth generation also has a representation, with [[Lucario (SSBB)|Lucario]] as a playable character.
