A character matchup, or a counter, is a prediction on how two characters would fare against each other in tournament settings. For example, the matchup between Snake and Samus favors Snake, while the matchup between Olimar and Diddy Kong is regarded as even. This chart does not decide the tier list, nor is it influenced by a character's tier ranking; it simply shows what the general likelihood of a match's outcome between two characters would be if two equivalent high level players fought each other with the two characters.
Below is the Version 3.0 edition of the Brawl Back Room's matchup chart for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The chart is current as of July 9th, 2013, with a wholesale new version stated to be "extremely unlikely", which would indeed never come to be before the release of Super Smash Bros. 4 and the dissolution of the Brawl Back Room. While the chart had some controversial matchup designations, most notoriously it still listing Pikachu as going "even" with Meta Knight despite the significant criticism the BBR received for listing that matchup as even in their prior matchup charts, it was accepted as the closest thing to an "official" universal matchup chart and held in similar regard to the BBR's tier list. While Brawl' metagame would become stagnant shortly after with the release of Smash 4, Brawl's remaining competitive playerbase has become increasingly critical of this chart over time for being outdated or simply just being inaccurate about certain key matchups, such as the aforementioned Pikachu-Meta Knight matchup that is now resoundingly agreed to be a winning matchup for MK, and so this chart is no longer held as being the definitive Brawl matchup chart. SmashWiki would accordingly follow suit with no longer holding these matchups as definitive across the wiki, with this article only remaining for archival purposes.
To use it, choose a character from the left side. That character's matchups are displayed in the corresponding row.
