{{s|zeldawiki|Masks}} in general first appeared in ''The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time'' as part of an optional side-quest where [[Young Link|Link]] can sell masks for the {{s|zeldawiki|Happy Mask Salesman}} in Hyrule Castle Town and obtain the final one. They return with a more prominent role in {{s|zeldawiki|The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask}}, where Link can utilize their powers to save the alternate world of {{s|zeldawiki|Termina}} from the game's [[zeldawiki:Majora's Mask (Object)|namesake antagonist]].

Majora's Mask serves as the final boss of the game, after Link restores the Skull Kid to his senses. It is fought in three phases, which transform into a humanoid figure after each fight; these forms are Majora's Mask, Majora's Incarnation and Majora's Wrath. Despite using powerful attacks (some of which are of a bizarre and childish manner), it is ultimately defeated by Link. It disappears, along with the [[moon]] that it had sent crashing towards Termina. Link wakes up in south Termina Field, and sees an ashamed Skull Kid. The Mask Salesman picks up the mask, seeing that the spirit has been destroyed for good, and bids Link farewell.
