Mr. Game & Watch is ranked 3rd out of 82 on the current tier list, placing him in S tier. This is a drastic improvement from his placement in Smash 4 where he was ranked 38th out of 54, and is his best placement in the series. Mr. Game & Watch's most notable strength is his unrivaled out of shield game: Fire is one of the most effective out of shield options in the game, as it possesses extremely fast startup with large hitboxes that are positioned on both sides of Mr. Game & Watch, allowing him to punish moves that are the slightest bit misspaced. In addition, Mr. Game & Watch also possesses a strong combo and juggle game in moves like his neutral aerial and up aerial, which complements his high damage output as well as great KO potential thanks to the high power in moves like forward tilt, down tilt and forward aerial and the low ending lag on his smash attacks, especially his up smash and down smash, the latter of which can bury opponents, and his attacks outside of down tilt generally have low ending lag, which alongside his small size makes him difficult to punish. He also possesses a powerful edgeguarding option in Chef to rack up damage and one of the strongest moves in the game, Judge, which can KO opponents at very low percents when getting a 9 and can be comboed into. Finally's Oil Panic allows Mr. Game & Watch to deal with projectile users, as it acts as both a reflector and an absorption based move.

However, Mr. Game & Watch possesses some notable weaknesses, the most significant of which is his extremely poor endurance. He is tied with Squirtle for being the third lightest character in the game, making him very easy to KO. In addition, most of his defensive options are rather poor, with short reaching rolls and dodges. Finally, despite having disjointed hitboxes in his attacks, his range is still rather lackluster, giving him notorious trouble against characters that can outrange him.
