Unlockable characters[edit]
After meeting either of the encounter requirements, the character must be defeated in a one-stock match to be unlocked.

Mii Fighters[edit]
While not unlockable in the traditional sense, the Mii Fighters will not appear on the character selection screen until at least one has been created.
DLC[edit]
The downloadable characters Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta were available for purchase. See Downloadable content (SSB4)#Pricing for the pricing.
Additionally, players who registered both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015 received a free download code for Mewtwo.

There are eight downloadable stages:
- Dream Land, Peach's Castle, Hyrule Castle, Pirate Ship, and Super Mario Maker were available for purchase. See Downloadable content (SSB4)#Pricing for the pricing.
- Suzaku Castle was included alongside the Ryu character DLC.
- Midgar was included alongside the Cloud character DLC.
- Umbra Clock Tower was included alongside the Bayonetta character DLC.
Poké Balls[edit]

Event matches[edit]
Event matches are unlockable by completing other events, the only exception being the starter events: “The Original Heavyweights”, located in the center of the solo events screen, and “A Lurking Menace”, located in the top-left corner of the group events screen. Hidden routes have an additional requirement: players must unlock a specific character (or, in the case of The Ultimate Battle, all characters) to reveal a hidden route.
