Evolution 2017, or simply EVO 2017, was the 16th edition of the Evolution Championship Series, a fighting game tournament held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event took place on July 14th to 16th, 2017, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. It was announced on January 24th, by EVO's tournament director Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar, that both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U would be featured as official games on the EVO 2017 game lineup. The ninth game was chosen via a donation drive with the proceeds gone to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Disney XD channel broadcasted Smash 4 Top 8 live on Sunday evening, which had been confirmed by a tweet from the official Disney account. The Smash 4 Top 8 was also broadcasted live on the ESPNU channel. These are the first two instances of a Smash 4 tournament being televised on a platform other than the Internet.[1][2][3]

Trivia

  • Bear, who is the main TO for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, was invited as a guest during the EVO 2017 lineup announcement to comment about Smash 4 and the fixes the staff at EVO would do in order to improve on the title's tournament performance from the previous year.
  • This marked the first time that the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U finals will be held on Sunday, and the Super Smash Bros. Melee finals will be held on Saturday.
  • This is the fifth consecutive appearance for Super Smash Bros. Melee at EVO (sixth overall), as well being the third consecutive appearance for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
  • EVO 2017 is the 10 year anniversary of Melee 's original appearance at EVO 2007.
  • Hungrybox was yellow carded following his set with SFAT due to Crunch appearing on-stage as his coach after the first game when the rules disallowed coaching after round 2 pools. This decision was met with controversy as the rules regarding coaching past pools would result in a match loss for the coached player which Hungrybox did not receive. However, SFAT was also allegedly being coached by G$, which resulted in the match standing; this led to even more controversy, as many people agreed that SFAT was not being coached at all by G$, as the action performed did not qualify under the definition. Crunch also stated that he was unaware of the rules.
    • Furthermore, the official EVO rules state that any incident should be reported at the time it occurs, and will otherwise be ignored, so technically, Hungrybox should not have been carded at all.
  • EVO 2017 stands as one of MkLeo's worst Smash 4 tournaments, placing 65th (the other being 2GGC: Civil War where he also placed 65th).
  • EVO 2017 also stands as Ally's worst Smash 4 tournament in 2017, placing 49th since placing the same at CEO 2016 over a year prior.
  • At the beginning of Smash 4's Top 8, Twitch experienced serious server issues, due to the large number of people around the globe who attempted to watch the event.[4]
  • Salem's run through this EVO's Smash 4 top 8 shares many similarities with Hungrybox's Melee performance at EVO the year prior. They both lost their winners semis matches by 0-2 against the #6 ranked player (Larry Lurr and Plup, respectively), then won their losers quarters matches against the top-ranked solo mains of their respective characters by 2-0 (KEN and S2J at the time), won their losers semis matches by 2-1 after losing game 1, won their losers finals matches against the players who sent them to the losers bracket by 3-1 after losing game 1, and seized the tournament victory against the #1 ranked player through two grand finals sets of five games each (ZeRo and Armada, who also both won an EVO before), while also sharing the same game victory order during the second set. Much like Hungrybox's famous comeback against Armada on game 5 of their first set of grand finals at EVO 2016, Salem also pulled an unlikely comeback against ZeRo on game 5 to win, albeit on the second set. Additionally, both Salem and Hungrybox are from Florida, and both are known for their slower, patient playstyle.
    • Salem's run also bears similarities to Nairo's finish at MLG World Finals 2015. Both in Grand Finals reset against ZeRo, and both ending the set with an off-the-top blast zone KO from a relatively low percent.
    • This is also the second Smash 4 tournament where Salem has double-eliminated ZeRo, the first being Collision XIV.
  • ZeRo temporarily deactivated his Twitter account shortly after the conclusion of Smash 4's grand finals. Although a number of observers believed he had done so to avoid harassment over his loss, ZeRo reactivated his account later in the day, stating he only deactivated his account to relax and that he did not want to worry anyone.
  • D1, who commentated with TKBreezy for the 2015 and 2016 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U finals as well as 2014's Super Smash Bros. Melee finals (with Prog), ended up commentating on DisneyXD/ESPNU this year alongside VikkiKitty. On Twitch, TK would be joined by his Black Plague partner EE.
    • Furthermore, EVO 2017 is the first tournament for any Super Smash Bros. game to be broadcast on live television (Super Smash Bros. for Wii U finals were broadcast on DisneyXD and ESPNU).
