Goombas appear in their 8-bit forms as [[background character]]s in the {{SSBM|Mushroom Kingdom}} stage.

Goombas appear as a common enemy in the {{b|Mushroom Kingdom|Adventure Mode}} stage of [[Adventure Mode]].

Goombas are also likely to appear out of [[Crate]]s, [[Barrel]]s, [[Capsule]]s, and [[Party Ball]]s in regular battles. They are one of three common enemies that can appear out of a [[container]] item, the other two being [[Octorok]]s and [[ReDead]]s.

Goombas appear as enemies in [[The Subspace Emissary]]. Similar to their ''Melee'' counterparts, the Goombas simply walk around and can be easily KO'd with one hit, even on Intense difficulty; however, the Goombas can charge at the player's fighter upon noticing them and they attack by ramming into them. Characters can also perform a [[Footstool Jump]] when landing on a Goomba, instead of bouncing up with no change in animation, which makes it harder to jump on several in a row because repeated footstools decrease in height.

Although Goombas are never specifically stated to be members of the [[Subspace Army]], they serve as subordinates of {{SSBB|Bowser}}, who is known to be a high-ranking member.
