Currently, the article lists Mario's appearance on the Donkey Kong Jr. Game & Watch as the inspiration for Luigi's blue costume. They do have a strong resemblance, but the fact that the Smash team bothered to change the hat emblem's color to yellow (while the DKJR box has no such emblem to begin with) has me thinking it could double as a reference to Luigi's appearance in the 1986 animated movie. It would be pointless to describe the default alt of someone like Mario because his design is essentially the same regardless of the game he's featured in with minor modifications like short sleeves in Sunshine.
