Small Battlefield (小戦場, Small Battlefield) is a downloadable stage in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It was released in the 8.1.0 update on August 4, 2020 (August 5 in some time zones).
Stage overview
As the name suggests, Small Battlefield is a slightly smaller version of Battlefield. The main change from the original Battlefield is that the top platform is removed, and the two soft platforms of Small Battlefield are slightly closer together than the bottom two platforms of normal Battlefield. This also makes it fairly similar to the hazards-off versions of Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2.
Visually, Small Battlefield has the exact same background as Battlefield. It is set in a futuristic ruins-like setting, while having other floating islands with crumbled buildings on them in the background.
Ω form and Battlefield form
Small Battlefield's Ω form is exactly identical to Battlefield's. Its Battlefield form is also exactly identical to Battlefield.
Tournament legality
Because of Small Battlefield's neutral and hazard-free layout, it is expected to be either legal in tournament play in some way, or banned due to being too similar to Pokemon Stadium 2. However, due to COVID-19, this remains to be seen.
Trivia
- This is the first DLC stage to be added into Ultimate for free.
- It is the third overall stage to do this, as Duck Hunt was added to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Miiverse was added to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U each in a similar fashion.
- This is the first DLC stage in the Super Smash Bros. universe.
- According to Masahiro Sakurai, the stage is designed for one-on-one battles. For these types of battles, he felt that Battlefield can be too wide and Final Destination can be too empty, so Small Battlefield was created as a middle ground between the two.[1]
- The development team was unable to add Small Battlefield as an option for all stages, so it was made its own stage, and the ability to play music from any series was added to compensate.[2]
