The forward tilt, abbreviated "ftilt," is performed by any character by holding the control stick forward and pressing A while on the ground.  To avoid doing doing a smash attack, you can lightly tilt the stick and press the button at the same time to the same effectSome f-tilts can be angled by tilting the stick more high or more low, and they are the only tilts that can be angled.
