| ==Origin==
| |
| X was designed by Hayato Kaji as the main hero of the Mega Man X series, meant to resemble his predecessor Mega Man but with a more advanced and mature look. X is the secret final creation of Dr. Light, the creator of Mega Man, and was unique as the first robot with human-like sapience and a capacity for free will. Not much is known about these early years, but Dr. Light sealed X in a chamber to teach him the concept of right and wrong, but no one ever came to retrieve X for unknown reasons. About a century after his entombment, X is discovered by Dr. Cain, who secretly used his specs were used to produce more robots like him, called Reploids. Over time, some Reploids began to malfunction or choose to harm humans, becoming known as Mavericks, and so the Maverick Hunters were organized to control this threat. Though unaware of the truth of his past, X joined the Maverick Hunters out of a desire to maintain peace between humans and Reploids. This culminated in the rebellion of the powerful Sigma, which serves as the premise for the entire series.

| In Mega Man X, X and his friend Zero work together to stop Sigma's initial rebellion, though at the cost of Zero's life. In Mega Man X2, X roots out the remnants of Sigma's army, facing the three X-Hunters who serve Sigma and threaten to rebuild Zero as an evil Maverick. By the end of this game, Sigma's true form is revealed to be a nigh-immortal computer virus, while Zero is resurrected but his dark past involving Dr. Wily begins to surface. In Mega Man X3, X and Zero work together to stop the rebellion of Dr. Doppler, who was corrupted by the Sigma Virus. In Mega Man X4, X and Zero stop a coup d'état by the military Repliforce, who were manipulated by Sigma into rebelling against the humans. In Mega Man X5, the Sigma Virus threatens to corrupt the entire planet, and when a space colony hits the Earth, Zero may give in to his original purpose and devote himself to destroying X. In the end, X and Zero defeat Sigma together, though Zero appears to perish again. In Mega Man X6, X reunites with Zero as the two face the mysterious Nightmare created by the mad scientist Gate, who also resurrected Sigma. In Mega Man X7, X temporarily retires to seek peaceful solutions to Maverick conflicts. This leaves a spot for the newcomer Axl to work alongside Zero to fight the illegal bounty hunters in Red Alert, who were also manipulated by Sigma. In Mega Man X8, X, Zero, and Axl work together to fight the rebellious new generation Reploids, who joined Sigma on purpose in a plot to destroy the Earth and retreat to space.

| Some time later, X and his allies do research on Zero, who had been put into a comatose state for repairs, which results in the creation of sentient computer program called Cyber-elves. One known as the Mother Elf was used by X to fully eradicate the Sigma Virus and end the Maverick wars. However, a traitor named Dr. Weil corrupted the Mother Elf into the Dark Elf, creating a new generation of Mavericks and starting the Elf Wars. X and a revived Zero capture the Dark Elf and swiftly end the war. X would eventually become a Cyber-Elf himself to seal the Dark Elf away. With the body of X unattended, Dr. Ceil creates a copy of X, which Zero has to defeat. Once all the Cyber-Elf threats are defeated, Cyber X lives out the rest of his days peacefully, allowing his physical body to be used as the basis for the Model X biomatch in the Mega Man ZX series. Thousands of years later, the only remaining trace of X is his own mega buster, which happens to be found by Volnutt in the Mega Man Legends series.
