The Toads as a species made their debut in ''{{iw|mariowiki|Super Mario Bros.}}'' as [[Princess Peach]]'s assistants, and have appeared in nearly every ''Mario'' game since. They are humanoid characters with mushroom-shaped heads and simple eyes who wear sports vests, white diaper-like pants reaching up to their chests, and brown shoes.

In ''Super Mario Bros.'', a single Toad is encountered at the end of the castle levels in World 1 through World 7 after defeating the fake [[Bowser]] where they deliver the famous line "Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!" Toad made his playable debut in ''[[Super Mario Bros. 2]]'' (a reskin of the Japan-only game ''{{iw|mariowiki|Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic}}'', then re-released in Japan as ''Super Mario USA'') as one of four playable characters. He has the greatest speed and power but has the lowest jump height, which would return with the playable appearance of a blue Toad in ''{{iw|mariowiki|Super Mario 3D World}}''. Toad also appears as a playable character in various ''Mario'' spin-offs and a common NPC in most ''Mario'' games.

Prominent members of the Toad race include {{iw|mariowiki|Toadette}}, a female Toad who mostly appears in the ''Mario'' spin-off games; {{iw|mariowiki|Toadsworth}}, an old Toad who acts as Princess Peach's attendant; and {{iw|mariowiki|Captain Toad}}, a Toad explorer who leads the reoccuring {{iw|mariowiki|Toad Brigade}} and helps Mario in his quests in the ''Mario'' series.

Toad serves as {{SSBM|Peach}}'s [[Toad (move)|neutral special move]] which can be used to [[counter]] an enemy's attack.

There are many Toads in Peach's castle and across the Mushroom Kingdom, and although they look similar, they have varied natures. Not the best of guards, Toad must often be rescued.

Toad's incredible uprooting speed in Super Mario Bros. 2 is unrivaled, adding to the rumor of his superhuman strength...however out of place it might seem.

The Toad trophy appears in both versions. In {{forwiiu}}, it is part of the ''Super Mario Bros.'' {{h1|Trophy Box|Super Mario Bros.}}. The Toad + Quacker trophy is exclusive to the Wii U version; it is part of the ''Super Mario Kart'' [[Trophy Box]].

|desc-ntsc=Though its appearance calls to mind an infant's toy, the Quacker is really a fully functional motorbike with some serious acceleration. That's because its frame is so light, you might expect it to float on water like a swan boat! But that lightness also makes it easy for other karts to push around, so try to stay out of trouble.

A {{iw|mariowiki|Blue Toad}} also appears as part of {{SSBU|Daisy}}'s moveset, acting in a similar fashion to Peach's Toad.

Toad also appears as three different [[primary spirit]]s. It can also be obtained by scanning the Toad amiibo.  

Toad's Spirit Battle uses a Mii Brawler puppet fighter wearing the Super Mushroom Hat and a blue Toad Outfit and is fought on the [[Princess Peach's Castle]] stage, which is is based on Princess Peach's Castle where Toad serves as Princess Peach's attendant in the ''Super Mario'' series. The music track is based on the theme song of Captain Toad, who serves as the main protagonist of ''Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker''. During the battle, the Mushroom items appear, referencing how the Toads are a race of mushroom-like humanoids. Also, the Mii Brawler favors [[Suplex]], referencing Toad's plucking abilities in his major playable appearances.

The Cheep Charger Spirit Battle uses a Peach puppet fighter and is fought on the [[Mario Circuit]] stage. During the battle, Peach favors her grabs and throw moves, which features Toad, who is depicted driving the Cheep Charger. Also, Peach has increased move speed, referencing the Cheep Charger's high acceleration stats.
