:Unless you're prepared to claim that Mega Man is also genderless, the robot claim is silly argument to make. Pokemon are referred to by gender-neutral pronouns in Smash stuff consistently with only one exception, as opposed to R.O.B. who frequently gets male pronouns. :::::::::Nintendo refers to him as male, he has only very rarely been referred using a neutral pronoun, Unlike Lucario, who has only been referred to as Male once, but genderless a bunch of other times. He was a robot designed to be male, technically speaking, he's genderless, but he is "male." It's like when a kid names their pet rock "Leo" or something.
