:In most core Mario games, the terms "double jump" and "triple jump" are used to refer to "when you land on the ground, jump again to go higher", as opposed to "jump while in the air", which I don't think anyone playable other than Yoshi has ever been capable of doing (aside from gimmicks like the Cosmic Spin). So I don't really think it's an applicable origin for them.
