:How about we use something like Jigglypuff for Smash 64, Mr. Game & Watch for Melee, R.O.B. for Brawl, Bowser Jr. for Smash 3DS & Duck Hunt Dog for Smash Wii U? They are all characters first introduced in each of those games and they were also unlockable in those. I realize that there are other characters that could be used too. These are just ideas. By the way, the trivia section states that Captain Falcon, Marth, Lucario, Luigi, Sonic, Ness, Wario, Toon Link & Jigglypuff are the only ones to be both starters & unlockables in separate iterations. Shouldn't Bowser Jr. & Ganondorf be added to that?
