I'm thinking that the IP spamming is caused by the direct link from the main page. If the SA box were changed to go to [[Forum:Smash Arena]] instead, it would probably redirect the spamming there (the page can then be safely protected since voters never edit it), but it would cause users to take a two-link path to get to the arena itself.
