Piplup's second evolution is Prinplup, who eventually evolves into Empoleon. In the anime, Dawn chose Piplup as her starter Pokémon after she rescued it from a group of giant Ariados. Piplup had trouble accepting Dawn as its trainer, but eventually began to trust her. Dawn uses Piplup to fight in both battles and in contests. |

The simpler the stage's terrain is, the more effective Piplup's Surf will be. Piplup can also be [[reflected]]. Its attack is essentially used the same way as [[Marill]]'s attack from ''[[Melee]]''. Sometimes Piplup will instantly use Surf.
