Miiverse originated as an app for the Wii U in 2012 alongside the console's launch. Users could (and still can) use the app to make, "Yeah" (like), and flag posts and comments, follow and befriend other users. It was later made available on the 3DS and web browsers in 2013, with largely similar features.

The Miiverse stage's green and white color scheme resembles the interface and color scheme of the social network greatly. In addition, the concept of drawings appearing on the stage is based on - and made possible by - the ability to post drawings or handwritten text on Miiverse using the GamePad or 3DS bottom screen.

Miiverse also features several communities for ''[[Smash 4]]'', including those for photo contests, in which users must submit images of the [[Trophy#In Super Smash Bros. 4|Photo Studio]] which match a certain theme.
