Goombas made their debut in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' as a common enemy, and have reprised that role in later ''Mario'' games. Along with the [[Koopa Troopa]]s, the Goombas are some of the most recognizable enemies of the ''Mario'' series. They are anthropomorphic brown mushroom-like enemies that feature a scowling face with fangs protruding from both sides of their lower jaw. They are said to have once been loyal to the Mushroom Kingdom, but switched sides upon the invasion of the Koopa Troop, though some Goombas remain peaceful.

Goombas are the most basic enemy in the series. They simply walk around, turn around at walls, and fall from ledges. They are known for damaging the player on contact, but they can be easily defeated by jumping on them. In ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario 64}}'' and all later 3D ''Mario'' platformers, Goombas actively pursue any nearby player, but they remain very weak. 

Multiple variants of the Goomba exist, with the most well-known being the {{s|mariowiki|Paragoomba}}, introduced in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Bros. 3}}'', which has wings and will lose them when stomped, the {{s|mariowiki|Galoomba}}, introduced in ''Super Mario World'', which takes more hits to stomp and can be thrown, the {{s|mariowiki|Giant Goomba}}, introduced in ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', which is very large and - in certain games - will be split in 2 after being stomped on, and the grey-skinned castle and navy-skinned underground Goombas exclusively featured in ''Super Mario Bros.'' and ''{{s|mariowiki|The Lost Levels}}''. Goombas may also stand atop one another as {{s|mariowiki|Goomba Tower}}s or hop around in {{s|mariowiki|Goomba's Shoe}}s to become {{s|mariowiki|Shoe Goomba}}s

Prominent members of the Goomba race include {{s|mariowiki|Goombella}}, a female Goomba and one of [[Mario]]'s party members in ''{{s|mariowiki|Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door}}'', {{iw|mariowiki|Captain Goomba|Mario & Luigi series}}, the villain protagonist of the ''Bowser's Minions'' side story in ''{{s|mariowiki|Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions}}'', and {{s|mariowiki|Goomboss}}, the king of the Goombas (similar to [[Bowser]]'s status for Koopa Troopas or [[Petey Piranha]]'s for [[Piranha Plant]]s) who debuted as a boss in ''{{s|mariowiki|Paper Mario}}'' and reprised his role in ''{{s|mariowiki|Mario Kart DS}}'' and ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario 64 DS}}''.

Goombas often appear in non-playable roles in ''Mario'' spin-off games, most notably as obstacles on ''Mario Kart'' tracks, however - in spite of their iconic status - their playable appearances have been few and far between, but whenever they can be controlled by the player, their lack of hands never impedes them, although their stats tend to be rather poor.

Goombas appear as a common enemy in the {{b|Mushroom Kingdom|Adventure Mode}} stage.

Goombas walk back and forth in the arena, falls of ledges, and damages the player's fighter on contact. If the player's fighter makes contact with a Goomba, they will take [[damage]] with moderately low [[knockback]]. Goombas can be defeated by dealing enough damage or jumping on them, which will result in a Goomba KO bonus where the player receives 100 points for each Goomba KO'd.

Goombas also have a {{Fractions|2|896}} chance to appear out of [[Crate]]s, [[Barrel]]s, and [[Party Ball]]s in regular battles. They are one of four common enemies that can appear out of a [[container]] item, the other three being [[ReDead]]s, [[Octorok]]s, and [[Topi]]s.

Goombas appear as enemies in ''Brawl's'' Adventure Mode, [[The Subspace Emissary]]. Similar to their ''Melee'' counterparts, the Goombas simply walk around and can be easily KO'd with one hit, even on Intense difficulty; however, the Goombas can charge at the player's fighter upon noticing them and they attack by ramming into them. Characters can also perform a [[Footstool Jump]] when landing on a Goomba, instead of bouncing up with no change in animation, which makes it harder to jump on several in a row because repeated footstools decrease in height.

Goombas are among the least threatening enemies in The Subspace Emissary. They have among the lowest HP and are easily defeated by one attack or jumping. Their movement speed is slow (though they are slightly faster when they charge), they do not have the ability to jump, and they appear oblivious to the player's fighter until approached. Their sole attack is slow in start-up lag and easy to guard against. Along with being slow, the Goomba's charge attack is weak, dealing low damage and knockback, having low KO potential overall even on Intense. When a Goomba begins its charge attack however, it will continue for quite a while, and if it goes past the player, it will turn around and then charge again.

Although Goombas are never specifically stated to be members of the [[Subspace Army]], they serve as subordinates of {{SSBB|Bowser}}, who is known to be a high-ranking member.

During the River Survival Spirit Battle, the Goomba uses a {{SSBU|Kirby}} puppet fighter and is fought on the [[Kongo Falls]] stage's [[Ω form]], referencing the jungle rapids which serves as the main setting of the ''Super Mario Party'' River Survival game mode. It is fought along with the {{SSBU|Bowser}}, {{SSBU|Yoshi}}, and {{SSBU|Rosalina & Luma}} puppet fighters. During the battle, the player's fighter must survive until the timer runs out, referencing the time limit of the River Survival game mode while Bob-ombs will rain from the sky, referencing the obstacles in said game mode, which will cause the players to lose if they don't avoid them. Also, the [[Party Ball]] and the [[Food]] items appear, referencing the balloons in River Survival, which will reward the players with extra time after completing the minigames.
