Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary (亜空の使者, Emissary of Subspace), sometimes abbreviated as SSE or shortened to Subspace Emissary, is a mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the successor to Melees Adventure Mode. It was hinted at with the This world... Dojo update on July 20th, 2007, and fully unveiled on August 3rd of the same year. This mode was succeeded by Super Smash Bros. Ultimates. World of Light.

Overview
On July 20th, Smash Bros. DOJO!! was updated with a collection of enigmatic images that depicted Mario and Kirby transforming from trophies into fighters (akin to the introduction of Melee). After Kirby's apparent defeat at the hands of Mario, he is changed back into a trophy, but Mario reverses the transformation and Mario and Kirby shake hands. However, the sky darkens soon after, and Meta Knight’s ship, the Halberd, flies over the stadium, soon followed by the appearance of a mysterious character. The screenshots were accompanied by this description:

In this world, trophies fight.  They know nothing but fighting. Fighting is the sole reason for their existence.  Being turned back into a trophy, being unable to fight, is much like death.  Those are the rules of this world. But...When someone...or something...breaks those rules, the world will pay a terrible price...
As confirmed on Smash Bros. DOJO!!, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature a new single-player adventure mode called the Subspace Emissary. Sakurai stated that although the past games featured a large multi-player mode, they've never created an extensive single-player adventure. This time, the developers have included a plot-line that features the histories of the many fighters in Brawl. The Subspace Emissary will also include many new diverse characters, enemies, and levels that will each play a part in the adventure. The mode will also feature dozens of cut-scenes which are rare among Nintendo games

The post was placed under a mode referred to as "???" until August 3rd when it was changed to "Adventure Mode". On August 3rd, Smash Bros. DOJO!! was updated again. This time, more information was given. The mode was dubbed "The Subspace Emissary", and a multitude of screenshots were shown, as well as a cutscene related to the "This World…" update. In the cutscene, Mario and Kirby were seen shaking hands, as depicted in the screenshots, and after waving to the crowd, the Halberd appeared as it did in "This World…". The mysterious character from before was shown to be one of apparently many odd, robot-like creatures formed from some sort of shadowy matter. Peach and Zelda were seen watching from the sidelines but rushed down to the middle of the stadium to assist Mario and Kirby in fighting the mysterious army. After Peach and Zelda reach the stage and help destroy the Primids, an entity from the sky called the Ancient Minister appears on the stage. The Ancient Minister drops a Subspace Bomb on the arena, then flies off. As Mario approaches the bomb, he is hit by a cannonball and is sent flying from the arena. Petey Piranha appears and captures Peach and Zelda in cages.
Structure
Stage selection is done via a map screen, which also allows players to select their difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Intense) and determine if you want two-player co-op play. Before the beginning of each stage, the player picks a "Team" of allied characters that he or she would like to use to complete that particular level. Each level has a fixed amount of lives that one can lose before the game is lost. Characters must be picked at the levels beginning or right after cutscenes.

The various screenshots in the update depicted a multitude of new enemies, as well as a few familiar ones, such as a Hammer Bro, who was previously confirmed as an Assist Trophy, and Bullet Bills. There were also a new series of enemies that were introduced that are part of the Subspace army. Some enemies of the Subspace army appear to be helpful while other ones are dangerous.
In-Game Structure
As you go through the game, your damage percentage will be displayed at the bottom of the screen for each player, just like in multiplayer battles. At the left side of the screen, a bar showing what seems to be your lives is displayed. A feature that was not present in Melee is that enemies nthem, their own health bars will be displayed at the top of the screen. More thanow have health. As you fight  one health bar may appear if you are fighting multiple enemies at once. If a characters is defeated the next character comes out. For example early in the game Mario, Kirby, Peach and Zelda ally together. If the order is Kirby, Peach, Zelda, Mario if Kirby is defeated Peach becomes the player's character. If Peach is defeated Zelda becomes the player's character and so on. If the number of lives is more then the number of characters then the order repeats. A second player can join the game at any time and controls the next character in the order.

Masahiro Sakurai has stated that substantial single-player content was a core priority during the development of Brawl. An adventure on the scale of a stand alone video game was decided early in development. Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that Sakurai always wanted to make a mode like this for the series, but was advised to focus on the multiplayer aspects of previous games due to the relatively short development times of previous games and there already being no shortage of single-player games. The much longer development time allotted to Brawl allowed the mode to be made. The initial plan was to outsource development of this mode to another studio, but no suitable contractor was available. In the end, the entire mode was developed internally by the main Brawl team. Only the cutscenes were created by a different studio.
The Subspace Emissary supports two-player co-op.  When playing cooperatively, the two players share the same amount of lives. If player one is on his or her last life, and dies, but player two is still alive, the game is still over. Within stages, the game's camera follows player one, and so it is player two's responsibility to keep up with player one. If the two become separated, player two may return to player one's location with the "Space Jump" technique.

Gameplay
The World
The Subspace Emissary introduces players to the true world of Smash Bros. This world is composed of a wide variety of terrain ranging from vast forests and grasslands to deep caverns and large deserts. The most notable structure is the enormous stadium that hovers over the land. It was the major place of all battles, until the Subspace invasion began. During this invasion, the entire stadium, along with any potential visitors, were engulfed in a subspace bomb.

The Subspace Emissary mode is a side-scrolling adventure in the style of a platformer, inspired by the Mario and Kirby games. However, it retains all basic mechanics of the Super Smash Bros. series, such as a damage meter, stocks, and Smash-style attacks. It can also be classified as a beat 'em up; often stages will pause at specific points and force the player to defeat a set of enemies, which prevents one from simply running through everything.

The mode features a world map where stages are selected; once a stage is selected, the difficulty can be chosen, and the character(s) will enter the stage. The selectable characters will change depending on the plot. Stages that have been completed already can be played again, with the one exception being a stage being consumed by a Subspace Bomb; if this happens, the player must complete the Subspace Emissary to be able to access the stage again.
The Storyline
The mode also has a two-player option, using one stock to join in. When using two players, the first player will have priority over the screen, making it possible for the second player to get run off the screen if the two players are not coordinated. However, the second player has the option to warp to the first player at any time (except in boss battles) by pressing the button that would normally pause the game. The first player must be present with stock left at all times; if the first player is defeated with no spare stock remaining, the game will end and offer a continue. If the second player is defeated, the first player can continue alone. In addition, only the first player can navigate through doors (though the second player can still utilize keys) and temporary switches. If the second player goes into a barrel cannon or minecart they will be teleported back to the player seconds later unless the first player goes in right after. The second player can also decide when barrel cannons shoot.
The storyline starts with Mario and Kirby fighting in the Arena with Zelda and Peach cheering in the stands. The story can be changed slightly depending on what characters you choose to play as. In this particular storyline, Mario ultimately wins, and Kirby turns into a trophy. As an act of compassion Mario revives Kirby and the two shake hands, forming a friendship. Suddenly, Meta Knight's Battleship Halberd arrives on the scene with an army of Primid, soldiers of the Subspace Army, along with a Subspace Bomb operated by two Robotic Operating Buddies (R.O.B). From the stands, Zelda and Peach come down to Mario and Kirby's side. The Ancient Minister, leader of the Subspace Army, then makes a brief pass, after which the ROBs activate the bomb which has a 3-minute timer. Mario charges forward to deactivate the bomb, but gets blindsided by a cannon ball and is shot miles away. Meanwhile, the two onlooking princesses, Peach and Zelda, get captured in cages by Petey Piranha. Kirby then battles Petey to save one of the two princesses.

When playing a level for the first time, many cutscenes will pause just before gameplay begins, showing a view of all available characters. A message will display how many stock the level allows, and a cursor will appear that allows choosing which characters to play. The order characters are chosen in is the order they will appear: they will cycle through in that order until all stock is depleted. Playing through a level again, there will be a screen before the level allowing choosing between any available characters instead of cutscenes during the level. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage: there is a wider character variety to choose from, but one cannot pick less characters than the number of stocks the stage has (meaning if a stage has four stocks, the player must choose four characters). Additionally, no mid-level cutscenes will play, including ones that would normally allow a re-pick of characters that replenishes stocks. While on many levels this makes little difference, it is very problematic on long stages like the second Subspace Bomb Factory, where a replay provides only a fraction of the stock originally given.
Once Kirby breaks one of the cages and saves one of the princesses, Petey is  defeated and burning. Wario next comes on the scene and turn the princess who was not saved into a trophy using a gun that fires black arrows. Wario  then grabs the trophy and flees. Meanwhile, the bomb is getting ready to blow, and Kirby and the princess take off on a Warpstar, neither being capable of destroying the bomb, which explodes soon after. The bomb imprisons the Arena and its crowd inside an enormous orb of dark Subspace Energy.

The physics of many (if not all) characters are also tweaked slightly. In general, characters run slower, fall faster, and jump better than in brawls. However, the midair jumps of a character that possesses more than one will be worse than normal. Move mechanics are not altered, although the differing jump heights, jump timing, and gravity will change how effective aerial attacks are. The most significant change is the removal of stamina from Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, which allows one to use one Pokémon exclusively. Characters are also able to swim for significantly longer. Characters retain their standard physics in boss battles. Because Smash relies on KOs by being knocked off stage, in order for the platforming nature to be retained, the camera's reaction time in following a character decreases in proportion to the player's damage.
Meanwhile, Pit, in Skyworld, is watching Mario and Kirby's fight on a screen. Once he sees the whole terrible scene, including the bomb explosion, he retrieves his bow from Palutena and sets off to help. Amidst the clouds, the Halberd appears and drops off a wave of Primid to hinder Pit. Pit prevails and notices Mario's trophy stuck in the clouds and revives Mario. Pit and Mario join forces with the goal of destroying the Subspace Army. They miss catching the Halberd but see an Arwing fly by.

Grabbing mechanics are also altered. Normal enemies cannot be held onto for any length of time; they will be thrown immediately after being grabbed, making it impossible to pummel them. This means that choosing which throw to use must be done with the Control Stick during the grab animation; inputting no direction will result in a forward throw (with the exception of Donkey Kong, who cannot carry enemies, and instead will utilize his up-throw). Special moves that involve grabbing will fail to grab, like Yoshi and Kirby's standard special moves; such moves have extra Subspace Emissary-only hitboxes (for example, Egg Lay will deal 13% damage, while Pikmin will deal damage when thrown). Bosses and large enemies cannot be grabbed; however, Big Primids can be grabbed effectively. None of these changes apply when facing an opposing Smasher due to playing like an actual Brawl, though Kirby will be unable to copy their abilities.
Kirby and the princess then get shot down by the Halberd and land on the ship. They then explore the surface of the ship when Fox and his Arwing come to fight the Halberd. Fox dodges laser fire but gets hit by the Halberd's retractable arm. Fox's Arwing then spirals and crashes onto the ship, knocking Kirby and the other princess down to earth. There, they battle members of the Subspace Army.

Meanwhile, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong chase after King Bowser's minions, who have stolen their bananas for some reason. After a battle with a Mega Goomba, DK and Diddy find their bananas, but are ambushed by Bowser. DK punches Diddy to safety, and is then reverted into a trophy by Bowser, who is using the same gun as Wario.

Difficulty Levels
Mario and Pit arrive at the surface world and chase the Ancient Minister but are unable to catch him.
Like most other single-player modes, one can select different difficulty levels to play The Subspace Emissary. At the creation of a new game file, the player may select a "default" difficulty from Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard, and Intense. Stages normally use this default difficulty (which cannot be changed), although the difficulty of a stage can be altered before it is begun. The game keeps track of the hardest difficulty level at which each stage has been cleared, and when a stage is selected, it suggests a difficulty higher than the highest completion level.

As one selects higher difficulties, the game makes these adjustments:
Later, Diddy finds Fox's crashed Arwing by an enormous lake. Rayquaza suddenly rises out of the lake, destroys what remains of the Arwing, and captures Diddy. Fox is ejected out of his destroyed ship at the last second and rescues Diddy from Rayquaza. Together the two fight Rayquaza.

*Enemy health goes up, sometimes considerably with bulky enemies like Greaps.
After Fox and Diddy prevail, Diddy literally drags Fox along to help revive DK. They find Bowser and defeat him, although it is revealed afterwards that this was merely a copy of Bowser formed by a horde of Shadow Bugs, which make up nearly all of the enemies from Subspace. The real Bowser strikes, and Diddy and Fox are forced to flee into the water.
*Enemies move and attack faster; especially noticeable with the vulnerability period of large enemies and bosses.
*Enemies and obstacles do more damage and have more KO power.
*Enemies' AI generally get smarter (such as attacking more often, or Bytans duplicating nonstop).
*More (and sometimes deadlier) enemies appear during locked battles.
*Less favorable items appear, although an increased number of stronger healing items appear when enemies are defeated.
*Stock Balls may get rarer (or, in the case of Very Hard and Intense, not exist, being replaced by recovery items instead).
*Certain features travel faster, giving the player less reaction time.
**Auto-scrolling areas scroll faster.
**Moving walls, floors, and ceilings move faster, making characters more easily crushed.
**Platforms move or fall faster.
**Bomb block explosion chains move faster.
**The effects of temporary switches are shorter.
*Wind speeds increase (including the wind from a Borboras), sometimes to nonsensical levels.
*More, higher quality, and rarer stickers appear.
*More collectibles (CDs, trophies, stickers) appear.
*More trophy stands appear.
*More coins are given at the end of each level.

Plot
Meanwhile, in a faraway place, Lucas is attacked by a Porky statue. He trips, but is saved by Ness, who defeats the creature. Porky then appears, and commences battle with Ness and Lucas. Porky is eventually defeated, but Wario ruins the moment by firing another black arrow at Lucas. Ness pushes Lucas out of the way, but in so doing is reverted into a trophy, which Wario runs off with. Lucas runs off.

When only one character is available in Co-op mode, P2 will control an alternate costume of that character. This happens in nine stages: Kirby (in the Midair Stadium vs Petey Piranha and the entirely of Subspace II),  Pit (in The Skyworld, before having Mario join), Lucas (in The Ruined Zoo when he runs from the statue), Marth (in The Battlefield Fortress, before joining Meta Knight and Ike), Zero Suit Samus (in The Research Facility before she joined Pikachu), Meta Knight/Lucario (in The Glacial Peak, only in the battle against the character P1 didn't choose), Snake (in the Battleship Halberd Interior, before he joined Meta Knight and Lucario) and King Dedede (in the Subspace I, only in the battle against Bowser). A ninth battle is at the beginning of the game, where Mario and Kirby duel. This also applies to Diddy Kong when replaying any stage after completing the Jungle before completing the Lake.

Bosses
Link pulls the Master Sword from its rock in the forest. The Halberd then flies over the sky and releases a group of Primid. Yoshi wakes up and both decide to team up. After the battle, they reach the end of the forest and barely miss the Halberd so they continue on.
These battles are fought with the bosses having a specific amount of health; once their health runs out, they are defeated.

All the bosses return in The Great Maze.
Zero Suit Samus is seen infiltrating an underground compound. She finds Pikachu trapped and being tortured by an electric beam. Samus frees Pikachu and is then attacked by ROBs. Samus and Pikachu then find what Samus was really trying to find: her Power Suit.

Mini-Bosses
Kirby and the princess encounter Bowser and he shoots the princess with the trophy gun. He then creates a copy of the princess and gives her the trophy gun.
Due to these battles being against smashers or slightly modified versions of them, they are fought like regular brawls. Note that the player characters listed are only mandatory for the first playthrough and that other characters may be used if the level is replayed.

Note: When only one character is available to fight a boss or mini-boss in Co-op mode, the second player plays as a color change of that character. This is the only way to play as a character’s alternate costume outside of replaying a stage where a character is battled, selecting this character as any stock aside from the first and not losing enough stocks to spawn as the character before the player activates the battle, in which afterwards the player should lose enough stocks so that they spawn as this character. This only happens in four battles: Mario/Kirby vs the character not chosen by P1, Kirby against Petey Piranha, Meta Knight/Lucario against the character not chosen by P1, and King Dedede against Bowser.

Other special enemy battle
Link and Yoshi then destroys the copy which catches Mario's eye, enraging him and attack Link and Mario and Pit battle Yoshi and Link. Link and Yoshi win and Mario and Pit become trophies. King Dedede drives by in the car and Kirby jumps on and tries to free the trophies. Kirby activates Mario and Pit. Pit then fires an arrow at the cart to slow it down.
*Porky Statue (The Ruined Zoo): it chases Lucas but it does not fight with him.

Battles with Subspace Armies
If Zelda is the copy: The fake Zelda tries to fire at Link but is stopped by Mario and Pit. Mario and Pit then destroys the copy which catches Link's eye, enraging him and attack Mario and Mario and Pit battle Yoshi and Link. Mario and Pit win and Link and Yoshi become trophies. King Dedede drives by in the car and steals the trophies. Kirby jumps on and tries to free the trophies. Kirby activates Link and Yoshi. Link then fires an arrow at the cart to slow it down.
Some segments in levels, or all a level, has a battle with some enemies from Subspace. Unlike ambushes during sidescrolling segments, red dots on screen are used to indicate how many enemies are left to defeat.

Similarities to the Kirby series
All of them team up and follow the cart all the way to a tunnel. The team then reaches what looks to be King Dedede's castle with the Halberd in the background.
The Subspace Emissary contains gameplay elements similar to the sub-games of Kirby Super Star and other elements from Kirby games. This is likely intentional, given Masahiro Sakurai's work on both games.
*The Halberd plays a very strong role in both games, and in both, it's destroyed and crashes in the ocean.
*The beginning of The Ruined Zoo (more specifically the boss battle against the Pig King Statue and Porky Minch) is similar to the Heavy Lobster battle in Revenge of Meta Knight: The player is chased by the boss, who remains invincible for this duration and plows through anything in its path. Following the chase, the boss becomes vulnerable and attacks the player head-on.
*Both feature minecarts and special devices that propel characters forwards. The latter's design and function comes directly from Kirby Super Star. Additionally, the slide launchers puts characters in a shield position, just like in Kirby Super Star. There are also bomb blocks which function identically to those from the Kirby series.
*The Space Jump is just like how P2 from Kirby Super Star comes back to P1.
*The final boss (Tabuu) teleports around the stage repeatedly (a common feature in most final bosses in Kirby games, such as Marx and Nightmare).
*Bosses from the Kirby games, such as wikirby and Marx, have similar moves to bosses in Brawl, such as Ridley and Tabuu.
*Bosses do not flinch.
*Enemies cannot survive underwater; they will be KO'd immediately upon touching it.
*Roaders are similar to Kirbys wikirbys.
*The Bucculus attacks in a similar way to wikirby.
*The planet Floria in Milky Way Wishes has a similar concept to the day-changing doors, except that it has four rooms and they are based on seasons instead of day and night.

Differences from other game modes
Ganondorf is watching all these events unfold, even watching his partner Bowser.
Gameplay
Despite characters using the same moves and using much of the same engine as in the other modes of Brawl, the gameplay of the Subspace Emissary differs from that of ordinary brawls:
*The walking speed, running speed, and air speed of most characters has been normalized; slower characters move faster, while faster characters move slower. This is quite noticeable with Captain Falcon and Sonic's dashing.
*Player 2 will receive a significant walking speed, running speed and jump height increase as their distance from player 1 increases. This is presumably to prevent them from falling behind too much, but happens regardless of whether they run ahead or fall behind.
*All characters jump 2 frames faster, jump 18% higher, have slightly higher gravity, and have a 19% faster falling speed. As a result, vertical movement is in general faster, while some characters' recoveries (such as Jigglypuff and Pit) are indirectly nerfed by the heavier physics.
**Peach's double jump has 40% more force; no other character has a change of more than 10%.
**Snake's double jump has 12% less force.
**Some special moves that grant temporary hovering, such as Diddy's Rocketbarrel Boost, can't keep up with the increased gravity and so are also indirectly nerfed.
*During side-scrolling stages, the player cannot get Star KO'd - the player crashes into the top of the screen, leaving behind the colorful explosion. Players are only Star KO'd or Screen KO'd in ambushes, boss battles, and fights against Subspace clones.
*All characters can swim considerably longer.
*The Stamina mechanic of the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon is removed.
*Grab-only special moves such as Inhale and Egg Lay deal damage to enemies instead of grabbing.
*In addition to blocking most attacks, Mirror Shield can also now do damage.

Dialogue
Lucas and Pokemon Trainer have reached a tall mountain and watch as Charizard flies by. They continue their quest to catch Ivysaur and Charizard. They reach the bottom of the mountain which appears to have an entrance. Wario appears and engages them in battle (Lucas remembers him and want revenge for what he had done to Ness) and loses causing him to turn into a trophy. With Ness nowhere to be found, the pair continues on.
While various characters in the Smash series have one-liners through taunts, battle cries, and the like, the cutscenes of The Subspace Emissary have very little spoken dialogue. The vast majority of character interaction takes place through actions, gestures, and expressions, augmented by short grunts or exclamations. Some cutscenes feature moves that have battle cries where the character says the move's name, such as Ness and Lucas using their PK Thunder or Captain Falcon using his Falcon Punch. The only character who speaks in more than one scene is Pikachu, who only "speaks" via yelling its own name. In Jigglypuff's only scene, the crowd chants its name, making them the only non-playable character to say a line.

Only one character in all of The Subspace Emissary ever speaks in a full sentence; in Battleship Halberd Interior, Snake directly says to the player, "Kept you waiting, huh?" after revealing himself. This is a classic line from the Metal Gear series. In Brawl, it references the extensive voicework in the Metal Gear Solid games, the frequent breaking of the fourth wall in the series, and the fact that the player had seen a brief glimpse before already in a much earlier cutscene.
King Dedede is touching up the trophies and puts his medallions on them. Bowser and his armies attack the castle knocking out the king and kidnapping the princess Wario took. Just as they leave, Team Mario arrives just too late to save them. Mario and Pit try to stop them, but Bowser escapes in his Clown Car and heads to the Halberd.

Names in other languages
The Ancient Minister sets up a subspace bomb to explode at the castle and flies away looking sadly at his ROBs.

Trivia
Ganondorf then receives a transmission from his master, Master Hand

*The Subspace Emissary's camera is programmed to only be able to move through certain area, and will lock if the player goes outside these areas. However, if the player goes a sufficiently large distance above or below the stage's vertical origin, this restriction will inexplicably be bypassed. It's possible that this was programmed in as a failsafe, but this is never possible in normal gameplay, due to the game using a local blast zone system based on the camera's location, and the different behaviour of the upper blast zone. Thus, this phenomenon can only occur if the local blast zones are modified to extend much further out.
*While the mode effectively encourages players to use almost every character in the game, it is possible to complete The Subspace Emissary using as few as twelve characters, or barely one-third of the roster: Kirby, Pit, Lucas, Marth, Zero Suit Samus (transforming from Samus by taunting whenever Samus must be chosen), Snake, Meta Knight, King Dedede, Diddy Kong, either Link or Yoshi, either Olimar or Captain Falcon, and one of either Peach, Zelda or Sheik.
**Co-op mode adds Mario, Ness, Donkey Kong, Fox, Pokémon Trainer's Squirtle, Ice Climbers and Pikachu alongside both pairs (instead of just one) of Link and Yoshi, Olimar and Captain Falcon, Peach and either Zelda or Sheik to the required list.
*Assuming the player rescues no other characters in either Subspace I or Subspace II, it is possible to finish The Subspace Emissary with only 6 characters available in the player's roster: Luigi, Ness, King Dedede, and Bowser from Subspace I, Kirby from Subspace II, and Sonic, who appears at the end of the Great Maze.
*Palutena is the only character in The Subspace Emissary who is neither a villain/enemy nor playable.
*As far as playable characters go, Wario, R.O.B., and Sonic are the only universes that do not have a song played at any time.
**In addition, Star Fox (excluding the hidden room in The Ruins) and the universes mentioned above are the only universes that do not have a song played in normal gameplay.
*Outside of the boss characters, the Super Mario universe is the only represented franchise that uses some of its characters as regular enemies, those being Goomba, Koopa Troopa/Paratroopa, Bullet Bill, Hammer Bro, and Giant Goomba. All of the other enemies are original characters.
*Mario and Kirby are playable in more levels than any other character, with a total of nine.
**Pit is playable in eight levels; Link, Yoshi, and Diddy Kong are playable in seven; Peach or Zelda, Lucas, Pokémon Trainer, Meta Knight, and Samus and Pikachu are playable in six (if one count all Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon (Squirtle appears in all six levels, Ivysaur appears in four levels, and Charizard appears in three levels) and both of Samus' versions (Zero Suit Samus appears in the first two levels, and Samus in the last five levels)), Zelda or Peach, Donkey Kong, and Fox are playable in five; Lucario can be playable in four or five; Marth, Ike, Falco, Captain Falcon, Olimar, and Snake are playable in four; Ness, Ice Climbers, and R.O.B. are playable in three; Mr. Game & Watch, Luigi and King Dedede are playable in two; Bowser, Ganondorf, Wario, and Sonic are playable in one; and Jigglypuff, Toon Link, and Wolf are absent until after completing The Subspace Emissary.
*The opening battle between Mario and Kirby in The Subspace Emissary may be a reference to the opening movie of Super Smash Bros., where the two face each other near the end of the movie.
**In addition, Mario's trophy coming to life in the first cutscene could be a reference to the beginning of Melees opening movie.
*The Subspace Emissary is the only mode in the Smash Bros. series thus far that allows players to unlock characters without fighting and defeating them. Ultimates World of Light bypasses the usual "Challenger Approaching" battle, but it still requires the player to fight the character that will be unlocked.
*The Subspace Emissary is mentioned several times in forwiiu in Palutena's Guidance during the conversation of Mario and Mr. Game & Watch and the North American English boxing alias for R.O.B. Also, some enemies from The Subspace Emissary return in for3ds's Smash Run mode. The Subspace Emissary is also referenced in one of the riddles regarding Tabuu, located in the Mysterious Dimension sub-world of World of Light.
*The health bars for enemies (not including bosses) are compressed at the left hand side, so a length of health bar represents more health at the left of the bar than the right. This makes attacks appear to deal less damage the closer an enemy is to dying.
*While all characters use their in-game models during cutscenes, certain parts of characters such as loose clothing and hair have increased polygon counts in order for them to perform smoother. Examples of this are Marth's cape, Link's hair, and Lucas's shirt.

They fight and are captured as he rockets up to the surface with them in its hands and discover he is carrying a subspace bomb. Lucas uses his PK Thunder to free them. As they fall to the ground, Meta Knight catches them and flies away from the bomb radius. Wario is absorbed by the blast.

Diddy and Fox are walking out of the jungle and Diddy is shot by a trophy blast from Bowser. Bowser fires at Fox, who dodges it. He then makes a Shadow Diddy. Bowser is about to shoot again but his trophy gun is destroyed by Falco, who flies in with his Arwing. Bowser escapes again in his Clown Car while Falco, Fox, and Diddy defeat the giant Shadow Diddy. Falco is then dragged along by Diddy to help save DK. They are too late to catch DK as he is transported away to an island in the sky. Falco summons Great Fox and Arwings.

Captain Olimar and his Pikmin are attacking a ROB on the same island, but most of the Pikmin are killed by it. A red Pikmin points to a the edge, when Captain Falcon and his ship destroy the ROB and kill most of the Pikmin. Despite this, the two apparently decide to work together. Olimar and Captain Falcon see Falco and Fox's ships attacking the ship that is carrying DK to the island. Diddy jumps out from one of the ships while Captain Falcon and Olimar jump off the island. They all land on the ship. Diddy activates DK and the 4 of them fight members of the Army. Fox and Falco return to looking for the Halberd while the others find themselves heading into the island.

Meta Knight, Marth, Ike, Lucas, and the Pokemon Trainer see the Halberd being attacked by Great Fox above a mountain. Near the top of the mountain they see the Ice Climbers climbing towards the summit. Meta Knight flies up to join them. Near the top of the mountain they run into Lucario. Lucario and Meta Knight fight. The loser (based on the players choice) is turned into a trophy but is revived by the winner and they become friends. The Halberd slams into the mountain, causing the Ice Climbers to fall off the mountain while Lucario and Meta Knight jump on the Halberd.

The Ice Climbers land near Marth, Ike, Lucas, and the Pokemon Trainer and are attacked by members of the Subspace Army. On a nearby hill are Mario, Pit, Kirby, Link, and Yoshi who fight the Army.

On the Halberd, Snake uncovers himself from under his box. Snake fights though the Halberd until he finds Meta Knight and Lucario. He hides under his box, but Lucario uses his Aura powers to see him under the box and uncovers him. Meta Knight is about to attack but Lucario see the Subspace Army coming towards them. The three of them fight the army until they reach a room. The room has the caged trophies of Zelda and Peach. Shadow bugs cover them to make clones of Zelda and Peach. Snake, Lucario, and Meta Knight fight and destroy the clones. Peach and Zelda are freed but are told to stay in that room by Snake.

Zelda transforms into Sheik and she and Peach escape the room. They fight their way to the top of the ship. Meanwhile, Fox and Falco continue to attack the ship. When Peach is almost hit, Sheik jumps onto to Fox's ship and pulls him out of it. They both land on the ship and begin fighting. Peach stops this and gives them both tea.

Snake, Lucario, and Meta Knight reach the control room of the Halberd to find it is controlled by many Mr. Game and Watches. They force them out onto the front of the ship where Peach, Sheik, and Fox are. The Mr. Game and Watches turn out to be clones made of Subspace bugs. These bugs reform into a giant robot. Snake and Lucario jump onto the front of the ship to join Peach, Sheik, and Fox while Falco lands his ship to join them. The six of them fight and destroy the robot forcing the bugs to flee the ship leaving a Mr. Game and Watch trophy behind. Sheik wants to attack the trophy but Peach activates it and gives Mr. Game and Watch her umbrella, which he plays with. Meta Knight regains control of his ship and flies it out of the red mist.

Back on the island, Pikachu and Samus attack a Subspace Army base and find the area where Subspace Bomb are made. Captain Falcon, Olimar, DK, and Diddy also find this area. The area is protected by the Ancient Minister and an army of ROBs. Ganondorf appears in a hologram and tells the ROBs to activate the Subspace bomb. The Ancient Minister tell them not to, but Ganondorf takes control over them and has them activate the bombs. The Ancient Minister tries to stop them but Ganondorf has them attack him. Initially appearing to be left to burn, the Ancient Minister turns out to be a ROB. He, Pikachu, Samus, Captain Falcon, Olimar, DK, and Diddy have to fight their way out of the base and off the island. Captain Falcon calls his ship and when they jump off a ledge, they land on it, but the ship is chased by Meta Ridley who they have to fight while on Captain Falcon's ship. They defeat Meta Ridley and escape the island just as the bombs go off.

The Halberd and Captain Falcon's ship land near the beach where The Ice Climbers, Marth, Ike, Lucas, the Pokemon Trainer, Mario, Pit, Kirby, Link, and Yoshi are. A giant cannon appears from the Subspace with Bowser and Ganondorf on top. It launches a beam of energy which creates area of subspace where the characters were. The Halberd then fly toward the cannon with the cannon's defense attacking back. The Halberd is hit, but out from it flies many of the characters other ships who fly toward it. From the opposite side, Kirby flies in on the Dragoon and cuts the cannon in half. As the cannon is falling apart, Bowser and Ganondorf retreat into subspace. The other characters follow.

The characters appear on a ledge inside subspace. They begin to fight their way toward the center. As Bowser and Ganondorf reach the center, Ganondorf uses the last trophy gun to turn Bowser into a trophy. Master Hand then appears in before Ganondorf. However  he has laser beams coming out from him like strings. The holder is Taboo. Ganondorf attacks Taboo but is thrown back against Master Hand who is released from Taboo's control. Ganondorf lands as a trophy but Master Hand gets up and attacks, only to be defeated. The other characters reach the center. Taboo grows wings and launches a wave that turns all of the characters into trophies. Taboo is then surrounded by glowing spheres and a path to him is formed.

At King Dedede's Castle (which is in Subspace) the badges the King put on Luigi and Ness's trophies revive them. They then remove the badges and revive Dedede. The three of them head toward the center of Subspace, collecting other characters trophies. When they reach the center, King Dedede revives Bowser, who attacks him. King Dedede beats Bowser and then re-revives him. Bowser is about to attack him but King Dedede hit him in the nose. Forced to realize the seriousness of the situation, Bowser decides to help out.

Elsewhere in Subspace, Kirby is revived and spits out King Dedede's badge. Kirby the heads toward the center of Subspace collecting other characters trophies. When Kirby reaches the center, he finds the Ganondorf trophy. Bowser then attack the trophy in a fit of rage. King Dedede tackles, hugs, and drags Kirby away.

If both Zelda and Link are saved by Luigi, Dedede, Ness, and Kirby, they revive Ganondorf and head toward Taboo. If Wario is saved, as King Dedede is looking toward Taboo, Wario tackles him. Ness and Luigi help the King up. Wario is shocked Ness and Luigi are alive. They point toward Taboo as they head toward him. Wario races up the steps on his motorcycle.

As the characters head toward Taboo, the spheres protect Taboo. The spheres turn out to be wormholes to the many areas absorbed by subspace. The spheres form a maze of many areas in the game. As the characters head though the maze doors led back toward the beginning (quick way thought the maze for future play).

All the characters fight Taboo, but they all lose. Then Taboo is about to turn the characters into trophies again, Sonic dashes in and destroys part of Taboo's wings, preventing him from turning everyone into trophies. The characters then battle Taboo.

After they defeat Taboo, the subspace wormholes vanish and subspace disappears. The characters all stand piece of ground and the camera zooms in on them. The credits then roll with short videos of various cutscenes in the game.

Wolf can join the other characters if after the credits roll the player returns to the part of the game right before Pokemon Trainer finds Ivysaur (with any characters), a new door will appear. The characters will appear in outer space where Wolf will attack them. The characters will fight Wolf in a official match with an announcer and intros on Lylat Cruise stage. The level will end after beating Wolf where Wolf will join the main characters party.

Toon Link can join the main characters if after the credits roll the player returns to the part of the game where Link and Yoshi are first playable. A new door appears in the early part of the level. Toon Link appear on a ship in the Great Sea and attack the characters. The characters will fight Toon Link in a official match with an announcer and intros on Great Sea stage. The level will end after beating Toon Link where Toon Link will join the main characters party.

Jigglypuff can join the other characters if after the credits roll the player returns to the part of the game where Fox and Diddy are attacked by Bowser. After the characters beat Giant Dark Diddy a new door appears. Jigglypuff appear on Pokemon Stadium 2 and attack the characters. The characters will fight Jigglyuff in a official match with an announcer and intros on Pokemon Stadium 2 stage. The level will end after beating Jigglypuff where Jigglypuff will join the main characters party.

Weapons and Defense
The Subspace Army possesses special weapons called Subspace Bombs. The R.O.B.s (Robotic Operating Buddies) assist in activating each bomb. When a Subspace bomb explodes, it creates an enormous ball of energy that engulfs the area and brings it into Subspace. It is currently unknown as to what happens to living creatures when sucked into Subspace. In addition to the bombs, the Subspace Army also controls Meta Knight's massive airship, the Halberd. They use the Halberd to transport their armies and deliver the Subspace Bombs to their destinations.

Shadow Bugs
These creatures are pieces of an unknown substance that can merge together to form Primids and other Subspace Army enemies. In addition, Shadow Bugs can also create an evil copy of one of the characters if they come into contact with a trophy of them. According to the Shadow Bug trophy, the Shadow Bugs were first extracted from Mr. Game and Watch and used by Taboo to form Subspace.

The Primid
The Primid are the Subspace Army's main offensive soldiers . They are puppet-like beings who bear the Subspace symbol on their chest and they appear in different types:

*Common Primid - These are the main Primid enemies that you encounter throughout the game. They mostly run around and make faces at you, but can also attack unexpectedly.
*Red Primid - Making a vague appearance in a trailer, this type of Primid is able to breathe fire.
*Boom Primid - These Primid carry enormous boomerangs and can therefore attack you from great distance.
*Bomb Primid- These black, red, and gray Primid carry large bombs. If you touch one, they will explode or throw bombs at you. Sonic is the best parter to take care of them.
*Saber Primid- Shown in a trailer, these elite fighters wield large, blue beam swords. Based on their nature, they are much more dangerous than other Primid variations.
*Laser Primid- These Primid are able to shoot red lasers from their hands.
*Big Primid- These Primid are the largest Primid type, hence the name. While they are very similar to normal Primid both in attacks and appearance, they are fairly stronger. They also have jump and roll attacks.

Other Enemies
The Subspace army have many robotic minions that assist them greatly during the game, including the R.O.B.s that were seen during the video, whom have missiles and lasers as their weaponry. So far the largest of their robots seem to be the Greap - a large hulking mechanic being that sports two incredible sickles. One of the strangest robots that they've created are the Shaydas, who seem to be made entirely out of fog - though also have two large sword like weapons as well. Their weak spot is the glowing orb in their chest.

The Bytan, while seemingly harmless - aren't, as the small spheroids are capable of multiplying. The Poppant, on the other hand, are relatively harmless, seeing that once you approach them, they'll cower and skedaddle off the stage. Roaders are unicycle like enemies who drive around the stage - and are very fast at doing so. Also, Roaders are reminiscent of the original ExciteBiker.

The Glunder is a static-producing eyeball that hides in a metal shell( There are also fire and ice-using variants called the Glire and the Glice.) When you get near them, they open their shells and send out electricity, fire or ice, depending on the type. Spaaks are large mechanical clouds that try to ram you. When attacked, they turn black and become more aggressive. Mites are tiny creatures that look like stick figure drawings. They like to attack in huge groups and are continuously produced through dark portals that can also be destroyed.

The Trowlon is a pink robotic like creature who is quite thin compared to many of the others. According to the website it'll use its trowel like arms to carry their opponents, or rather your character, away. Whether or not this means an instant kill is unknown. Auroros are large mechanic birds who'll charge their beaks into the ground, attempting to harm you.

Borboras are humanoid, mechanical beings that have trumpet-shaped mouths. They can blow strong gusts of wind to knock you off nearby ledges. Puppits are wooden mannequins held up by strings. They attack with their long claws or by shooting lasers from their eyes. Feyeshes are floating one-eyed squids that attack viciously with their tentacles. Tickens are bulky mechanical suits piloted by small chicks. If the suit is destroyed, the chick will quickly fly away. Jyks are indestructible electric spheres with spikes that move in various directions.

Aside from these well-known enemies, there are others that have also been confirmed to appear. A few of these come from an actual series, including the Hammer Bro., Bullet Bills, Goombas, and Koopas.

Bosses
There are 8 non-playable bosses the player fights throughout the game.

Petey Piranha is the first boss in the Subspace Emissary. You will fight him as Kirby. He will attack using the cages that contain Peach and Zelda which he captured. Your job is to break one of the cages, thus freeing the princess inside. He explodes when defeated.

Rayquaza, the second boss, is fought by Fox and Diddy Kong after Fox's ship crash lands by his lake. He attacks  by ramming into the characters, his Dragon Pulse move, diving into and from the ground , using his tail as a whip, and causing a thunder bolt to strike the characters. He also explodes when defeated.

Porky attacks Lucas and Ness in a robot to form the third boss fight. He attacks by ram the characters, lightning bolt coming from an electric sphere he forms, other forms of lightning, exploding robots, and a giant needle to stab the characters.

A new boss, Galleom, is found by Ike, Marth, and Meta Kinght in the desert. He appears to be a giant robot. He then attacks them by stepping on them, punching them, earthquakes, ramming them, and falling on them. When defeated he jump away from them and falls down a hole. He lands in front of Pokemon Trainer and Lucas. He then attacks them in the same way. When defeated by them he picks them up and an active subspace bomb is on him. He rockets into the air. They manage to break free, and he is destroyed by the bomb.

Ridley attacks Pikachu and Samus as they are escaping a base on a floating island. He attacks by ramming them with his tail, jumping on them, ramming them, and causing winds that can knock them off the field.

A currently unnamed boss is formed by the shadow bugs that come from the defeated Mr. Game and Watches. He attacks Fox, Falco, Peach, Sheik, Snake, and Lucario. He looks like a giant knight robot one-half pink, one-half blue. The two parts are connected by a set of wheels.  He attacks by cutting them with his arms, jumping on them, hitting them with missiles, ramming into them, hitting them with flying mines, and hitting them with lasers.

Meta Ridley attacks Pikachu, Samus, Captain Olimar, Captain Falcon, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and ROB as they are escaping the Subspace Army headquarters on Captain Falcon's ship. If they do not defeat him in two minute they will be catch in many the subspace bombs exploding. He attacks by spitting fire at them, ramming them, attacking them with his claws, and lowering the ship off screen (beating them if they are on it).

The games final boss, Taboo, is attack by everyone at the end of the game. He attacks in may ways. They are turning into a fish and ramming them, grabbing them and throwing them, throwing a star at them, launching three waves that can throw them offscreen, cutting them, launching needles at them, attacking them with a cannon, growing huge and then shooting lasers from his eyes, caging them and throwing them into the ground, hitting them with electric spheres, hitting them with spikes, and hitting them with star bombs. These attacks do high amounts of damage the lowest being 38%.
