With Anyone
With Anyone is one of two modes for online play. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl's version of this mode, the player could play with people they were not friends with. The opponent(s) did not know their name or receive any personal information about them. There were also be no battle records kept for this mode. With Anyone contained three different options. Brawl's online modes were shut down on May 20th, 2014.
In Super Smash Bros. 4, "With Anyone" has been split into two modes: "For Fun" and "For Glory".
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Basic Brawl
The player could battle online with players they were not friends with. Players had 45 seconds to select a character; this measure was in place to prevent stalling. The players could cast a vote on what stage to play on and what items to turn on or off using coins. If a player left in the middle of a match, the entire match ended and everyone taking part would be sent back to the Wi-Fi selection screen.
Spectator
In this mode, players could watch other people's battles. The player could bet up to 100 coins on a player or team that they thought would win the match. If the player or team the player bets on won, there was a jackpot and the player would receive roughly three times the amount of coins bet, or two times the amount bet if it was a team battle. Occasionally, there were be a bonus rounds in which the player could earn double the usual amount of coins received if the selected player was the victor. If the person the player bet coins on won, they would gain more coins. Also, the player could win some stickers, even if they lost.
Team Battle
Team battle did not allow two players on the same Wii facing two other players, unlike in With Friends mode. Instead, the player was randomly matched with someone for their partner, and battled two other players on a team with Team Attack off. The player needed to have four players to start a With Anyone Team Brawl on Wi-Fi. A Team Battle player was unable to change their character's color, and the team colors were randomly chosen as Red or Blue.
Criticisms
Brawl's With Anyone modes received much criticism relating to their mechanics and the nature of gameplay:
- Matches could only be 2-minute Time matches, which was often too short and does not provide enough time for thorough gameplay. Coin matches and Stock matches could not be played.
- Players could only have their choice of items or stage one-fourth of the time, and were often forced to play with items and on stages they did not wish to play on.
- Online matches were commonly filled with players of low skill level, players who ran away from all combat, players who griefed and fooled around during matches, and players who did not input any controls.
- Basic Brawl matches could only have three or four players, and CPUs were randomly forced in when there were less than three players, sometimes making 1v1 matches impossible.
- Players had no way of being able to rematch certain opponents in the future, and could not prevent themselves from playing against certain opponents.
- Inputs had several frames of input lag, meaning that actions on screen occurred later than they normally would have offline, and slow connections frequently slowed down or halted gameplay.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
Online play returns in Super Smash Bros. 4, and addresses much of the problems in its previous incarnation from Brawl. Two distinct game modes are available: For Fun and For Glory. In both modes, Mii Fighters and character customization are disallowed. To use Miis or customizations online, the player must be in With Friends, or in a Tourney that allows them.
For Fun
This mode allows for battling more on the fun side instead of being competitive. In this mode, all items are enabled, as is every stage except for Final Destination and any stage's Omega forms. Only the player's number of wins are recorded. Two battle modes are present in For Fun: a free-for-all Smash and a 2-on-2 Team Smash, both 2-minute Time battles.
For Glory
This mode on the other hand, allows for more competitive play catered to more experienced players. Items are disabled and the only stages available are Final Destination and Omega form stages. Wins, losses, and other stats are recorded. For Glory adds a third battle mode in addition to the two present in For Fun: a 1-on-1 Smash, which is a 2-stock battle instead of a Time battle, much like the settings of competitive tournaments.
Fixes from Brawl
Masahiro Sakurai, the game's lead developer, announced plans to solve many of the problems found in Brawl; the new game modes allow players to play with items off and on Omega stages every time they play or with items on and on any non-Final Destination stage. Online Team battles return as well, functioning similarly to Brawl. A ranking system is used to determine the opponents a player fights against. In addition, a new ban system was implemented for more enjoyable battles. Punishments and temporary bans are be given to players who:
- Join but does not fight (don't touch the Control stick for 30 seconds, even if holding a button for attacks like Inhale will count as being idle. Note that this only disconnects the current match without a ban)
- Relentlessly target a single player
- Repeatedly self-destruct
- Frequently drop out (for any reason)
- Cheat (stated as "other abuses of the system")
- Report another player falsely or without a good reason
Of note is that if one is banned from With Anyone, then they are also banned from With Friends.
71582788-Minute Ban Glitch
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, a glitch could occur that banned a player from online play for 4,294,967,295 seconds (displayed in-game as 71,582,788 minutes and 15 seconds), or about 136 years; the glitch often occurred as a result of constantly pursuing a single player in free-for-alls. The cause of the glitch is thought to be due to an overflow error; the system in place erroneously banned players for -1 seconds, causing the time to rollover to an extremely large number[1].As of an update the glitch became unusable.
