Novel idea or terribad idea?

Should we move #sw to #smashwiki? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Incomperable 23:30, 11 November 2013 (EST)

I don't really care one way or another, but if I had to pick a side, I think "#smashwiki" makes the channel's name more identifiable, as "SW" can be used as an acronym for many things. SmashBall104: Super Effective? My ass! 19:11, 12 November 2013 (EST)
Move #sw could stand for Star Wars or Save the Whales or something like that. Awesome Cardinal 2000 19:14, 12 November 2013 (EST)
Well I guess it would be fine to move it, if you're fine with going through the hassle of having to recreate the access list and having to redirect the channel frequenters who aren't aware of this move suggestion to the new channel. Scr7Scr7 sig.png(talk · contribs) 11:51, 21 November 2013 (EST)

...are you serious? I've been counting the days and it wasn't time yet. Ugh. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Steppin' 10:06, 23 December 2014 (EST)
Okay I found the problem. Not only was the expiry time shorter than I was lead to believe (two weeks, not two months), but so was the minimum userlevel required to maintain it (300, not just "any op"). Once GameSurge's website starts working properly, we'll give all our ops level 300, and that should be a much stronger fix. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Wacko 10:40, 23 December 2014 (EST)

Move onto another network?

After talking with fellow IRC users on this matter, it has come to my attention of a move from GameSurge onto a new network. Considering GameSurge's lack of convenience as of late and relatively instability, it would be called to move it onto the network administrated by fellow IRC user, FastLizard4. But why? Here's how:

  • We won't have to worry about registration dropping
  • More staff on to monitor the channel as a whole
  • Authserv and most other GameSurge services are horrible. LizardIRC has better services in general.

These reasons let alone should be enough on why the move should be made. Coupled with a server that can be configured to our needs, I see no wrong in such. ConnyAirconny Snake Sig.png 12:51, 16 May 2014 (EDT)

Support: All of the reasons stated above. LizardIRC is a cool network full of cool people. DoctorPain99 13:33, 16 May 2014 (EDT)
Support. With the ops of the channel barely ever being on, combined with the short time in which channels automatically drop on GameSurge, the risk of the registration of the channel just dropping like it did today is a really bad thing. The services of GameSurge are also terrible; I can't authenticate just because I don't have a specific hostname, and I need to do some authcookie command crap just to identify myself to AuthServ? I don't even get why GameSurge doesn't just use the normal NickServ. Pretty much all the other networks using the "Serv" family don't have this problem. Per what Conny said, LizardIRC is a significantly more convenient network for a channel like this than GameSurge. Scr7Scr7 sig.png(talk · contribs) 13:46, 16 May 2014 (EDT)
Support. Considering the inactivity of ops, we should prioritize joining a network that won't expire our registration, and LizardIRC is an option that shouldn't be overlooked. JamesJH-Heartless.pngHeart 22:56, 16 May 2014 (EDT)
Support. LizardIRC is way more simpler to use than GameSurge. Also, GameSurge's layout isn't like all the other IRC servers. :P Dots (talk) Link OoT Dots.PNG The Jiggly 23:11, 16 May 2014 (EDT)
Support, for the reasons stated above. --Timson622222 (talk) 18:04, 17 May 2014 (EDT)

About the the whole "inactivity of the ops" thing:

  • Every single one of us have lives and stuff. PoD doesn't use the Wiki anymore, Miles isn't an IRC guy, OT is super busy with life and what not, Toomai does Canadian things, and I'm either in school or playing rat doto.
  • All of us really can't be arsed to stay on the IRC and monitor it forever. In everyone else's case, they're too busy with life to even check on and look actively. In my case, I'm just busy enjoying life and playing doto.
  • Out of all the users mentioned, OT and I are the only ones who have actively given out our contact information: Skype and/or Steam accounts.
  • Put one and one and one together, and you have two options: really hope that we change our ways of life (unlikely) or figure out how to contact us in case of shit like this going on or in case of a spammer or something.
  • Bullet points were unnecessary for presenting this information, but they make it look different. MegaTron1XDDecepticon.png 23:02, 16 May 2014 (EDT)

Support It is rather glitchy right now. RoyboyX Talk 10:26, 18 May 2014 (EDT)

I can't shake the feeling that all this support is coming from a group of "cool kids" that support this "LizardIRC" for reasons like "we're buddies and we want to use the same network as our favourite channels, and we're using one lapse of GameSurge to get it done". Toomai Glittershine ??? The Quiet 14:07, 19 May 2014 (EDT)

I've had issues with GameSurge for years and have always voiced such issues. This is the only time anybody actually listened. DoctorPain99 14:15, 19 May 2014 (EDT)
Additionally, I'd be fine with basically any decent network. LizardIRC just seemed like a feasible option with a good amount of support behind it. DoctorPain99 14:16, 19 May 2014 (EDT)
I support moving to any network that won't expire our registration, since I have also known of a channel on Chatspike to lose its registration (though that one's main op still hasn't made an effort to claim it that I know of). I have been informed that Freenode would also work, and I'm sure it's not the only one. JamesJH-Heartless.pngHeart 19:07, 20 May 2014 (EDT)

Recent activity

It has come to my attention that some of our regulars have been trolling on MarioWiki's IRC the same way they've been trolling on ours lately (I'm not giving out names, you know who you are). So, it's time to get a foot put down.

I will no longer tolerate any sort of Twitch-like chatspam. Offenders will be banned if they don't knock it off. Offenders will also be banned if I hear any more complaints from other NIWA wikis (with suitable proof of course). If things don't quiet down effectively, I'll get SpamServ into the channel to help curb it. We've been too lax on this and it's time to quit screwing around. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Loony 18:58, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

I'm going to chime in here and add my own point of view. I've seen the spam here, (posting in ALL CAPS, typing out odd faces with characters I've never seen on a normal keyboard, using non-existant words like "goy" and "uwu", etc.) and I'll admit, it's pretty boring to come on IRC anymore because of it. Every time I show up, it's pretty much the same group of users clogging the chat with constant uses of the examples listed earlier in this post, among LOLs and other shit like that, so I fully agree with reinforcing the no-spam rule. As for the trolling...I honestly haven't seen it. The only thing that comes to mind that even resembles trolling is that overused "tech skill" joke, but from what I've seen, it hasn't offended anyone. Also, I've occasionally seen users badmouthing other IRC regulars (most notably, Brian) when the users that the conversation is centered on aren't in the chat. Though of course, the trolling that you're specifically referring to might be a different case.
So here's my idea. First things first, I say we remove the "All enforcement is done at a moderator's discretion" rule, since every time I see these things happening on the channel, there are usually about 3-4 mods on, (not counting you) and from what I've seen they haven't done anything. From now on, the mod should immediately take action when they see someone breaking a rule and/or receive a log of it. Oh, and while I suggest that, I might as well suggest another rule that I've been planning to propose for months now, since I think that it may help alleviate the situation somewhat:
"Keep the posts on as few lines as possible. Do not type sentences that are less than 3 words long repeatedly, and never post one word at a time. Using too many lines to convey your messages floods the chat, and makes it difficult for others to get what you're saying."
Hopefully this rule, plus my other suggestions will make the IRC a better place. Aaaand, that's all I've got. MeatBall104; Now with lean, grass-fed Angus! 19:27, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
A "don't post short lines" rule is kind of pointless. If people are abusing short lines, that's naturally spam. And enforcement is done at mod discretion by definition, that's not something that can be removed. The point of this post is to say that mods (including myself) are being too lax. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Brazen 19:35, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
@MeatBall104: Goy is a real word. Your argument is invalid. DoctorPain99 19:40, 22 October 2014 (EDT)
(Edit conflict) I guess I'm better off simply stating my POV. I fully agree that the mods should step up their game. However, I only proposed those slight rule-changes to make the results even bigger when they're combined with the mods actually working to stop this spam and trolling. My removal of the enforcement rule was BECAUSE of how the mods weren't enforcing the no-spam rule (seriously, all they ever did was just sit there and pay seemingly no attention to all this crap), and I proposed to add the no short lines rule to minimize spam even further. So, sorry if I wasn't completely clear. Additionally, maybe adding a SpamServ in addition to BOTH of those would increase the result even more. Now as for me, I'm going to step out so others can say something to help move this discussion along.
Also, @DP I never knew that it was a real word. I stand corrected. MeatBall104; Now with lean, grass-fed Angus! 19:57, 22 October 2014 (EDT)

I made a thirty minute conversation with someone two days ago in IRC after lurking daily in two months, so that's good I guess. We do introduce IRC to the new users, don't we? Registration about to expire again

Last time someone with the required access was on the channel was 1 week, 6 days ago. Just a heads up. Oscuritaforze (talk) 22:56, 9 August 2015 (EDT)

Dead.

Since its registration expired, #sw is no longer a channel on gamesurge, let alone nobody talks over there anymore. We should probably discontinue this (like have SmashWiki no longer link to #sw). Dots (talk) Mega Man X SNES sprite.png The Zerg Rush 16:05, 29 October 2015 (EDT)

Well, since nobody responded at first, let me put it to you guys in a simpler matter if any of you guys would care to listen. There is only one or two IRC user(s) in the chatroom and there has been literally no discussion at all for three months by now. Chanserv has left the channel so this means that #sw is no longer a registered channel with ops, voices, modes, etc. Why still leave a link to the channel on the Main page when nobody goes no there anymore? Dots (talk) Mega Man X SNES sprite.png The Reaper 19:48, 3 November 2015 (EST)

You know what? If it's so dead right now, this is probably a good time to move it over from #sw to #smashwiki. I think I'll do that; it might stir up presence again, and the only thing stopping us before was not wanting the hassle of moving everyone over (which there isn't right now). Toomai Glittershine ??? 1. Still a major oppose Ultimately, I still see no reason to fix what isn't broken. There's a lot of factors here, but the main one is that we barely ever get anyone on the IRC to begin with. I mean, if we did move to Discord, there is a chance we'd get more people, but one thing I feel is necessary to point out is that Serpent King at one point tried to put together a SmashWiki Discord and that fell through. What it boils down to, quoting something Toomai said one time, all the arguments boil down to are "Discord is new and improved" while "the IRC is well-established and popular". New doesn't always mean better, and, as someone who uses Discord, I still don't think Discord's good enough for a new SW IRC yet. It's getting close to what I'd prefer it to be, but it may still take another year. Maybe more, maybe less. Disaster Flare Disaster Flare signature image.png (talk) 15:29, 6 November 2016 (EST)

@DF, The reason SK's failed attempt happened is because only the people on the IRC channel at the time would of heard about, how is it supposed to succeed if he doesn't advertise it on the rest of SmashWiki, in fact it haven't even been mentioned to me and lots of other users, if other users would have known about it, it could have actually gone somewhere PoultrysigSSB4.pngPoultryPoultrysigSSBM.png(talk) the God-Slayer 17:39, 6 November 2016 (EST)
