List of Director's Room Miiverse posts

From SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

Starting from E3 2013, Masahiro Sakurai began posting one new screenshot from the upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4 every weekday in the Miiverse community known as the Director's Room, as well as on the official website for the games. Known as the "pic of the day" series, it was initially just a posting of a screenshot with no information or comment about it provided, but after the start of July he also began adding comments, that were a remark about the screenshot or information about what the screenshot was portraying. In the beginning, the pic of the day series mostly consisted of random screenshots with Sakurai giving no real information about the game, with few being updates of actual information, and barely any of them being something significant. As the series went on however, the proportion of them being updates with actual information gradually increased, and since the start of 2014, nearly all of them have been some sort of informative update, with each week having multiple significant updates. This is an archive of these posts.

SSB4 - Dillon.jpg
Pic of the day. We didn't introduce ALL of the Assist Trophies in the Smash Bros. Direct. Here's Dillon from Dillon's Rolling Western!! He may rival Sonic in the art of rolling. Confirms Dillon as an Assist Trophy, while also confirming that there are still more Assist Trophies to reveal. Sakurai also shows Dillon's trophy, and gives some vague information on how he'll assist.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 - Dillon Trophy.jpg
Pic of the day. This is his trophy. He may be an animal, and his buckles are definitely on the adorable side, but there's no denying he looks cool!! His Assist Trophy can even do things like a quick charge.

Boxing Ring Light Fixture.jpg
Pic of the day. You can get up on the lights of this special ring. It's a perfect secret hiding place. Shows off a previously unseen platform in the Boxing Ring stage situated on the lights, as well as the ability to destroy this platform and darken the arena. While not stated, the image implies the lights will damage players they fall on, as Little Mac can be seen being sent flying without any other source being the definitive cause.
Miiverse Icon.png
Boxing Ring Broken Lights.jpg
And you can attack the lights and have them fall to the ground! That makes things dark. The lights are way up high, but even Little Mac can get up there by jumping off the ropes.

SSB4 - Smash Run Samus.jpg
Pic of the day. Members of the Enemies That Love to Hide Association, here are Octorok and Met. Calmly grab them while they're ducking. Gives information about Smash Run enemies that can hide and presumably make themselves invincible to all non-grabbing attacks, like Kirby's Stone. Also reveals the Octorok as a Smash Run enemy.

Wonder Red Trophy.jpg
Pic of the day. Fight! The Wonderful 100!! We also made trophies of some of the other Wonderful Ones. Confirms Wonder Red from The Wonderful 101 will appear as a trophy in the Wii U version, and that other heroes from that game will appear in the same capacity.

SSB4 - Bullet Bill Item.jpg
Pic of the day. Bullet Bill here is an item. Can you guess what happens when you use it? Confirms Bullet Bill as a new item, and its function. Bullet Bill's presence in the Wii U version of the game had been previously revealed as part of a press kit of images released onto the internet after the Smash Direct. A different pic of the day, showing the Polar Bear, was briefly available on the official site before being replaced with the Bullet Bill image. The reason for the switch is not clear, as the Polar Bear was also revealed in the same press kit. However, it reveals that the Polar Bear attacks players by doing a ground pound.

Bullet Bill SSB4-U fired.jpg
Answer: You turn into Bullet Bill and go full speed ahead!

SSB4 - Dragoon Aim.jpg
Pic of the day. Uniting three parts will complete the legendary Air Ride machine…the Dragoon! It's back! But we didn't just leave it the way it was, and added some nice touches to the design of the targeting screen. It is, of course, in stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS. Confirms the Dragoon as a returning item, and its graphical improvements.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 - Dragoon.jpg
Just the target screen felt lacking so here's a pic of the Dragoon itself. I wanna get on it. I wanna get on and ride it.

SSB4 Little Mac Wire Frame.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's wire frame Little Mac--re-envisioned from the original Punch-Out!! game. The man that actually drew the pixel art wire frame in the original was none other than Shigeru Miyamoto. He said he drew the pixels for the wire frame on graph paper. Provides trivia regarding Little Mac's wireframe design.

SSB4 - Flare Blitz.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's Charizard's new special attack, Flare Blitz. It's a very powerful attack--however, you'll take recoil damage if you make contact. Pretty true to the original game, huh? Flare Blitz is Charizard's side special move, and Rock Smash is the down special move. Confirms a previously seen but unknown new move as Flare Blitz, along with giving some information on it. It is additionally confirmed that Charizard will retain Rock Smash, and that it will be its new down special move, while Flare Blitz replaces Rock Smash as Charizard's side special. It also confirms the previously seen Mega Charizard X will be its new final smash.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 - Mega Charizard X.jpg
And here's Mega Charizard X. This will appear as Charizard's Final Smash.
May 14, 2014
Brittany.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's one of my personal favorites, the trophy of Brittany from Pikmin 3. She won't be joining the battle, but her model and expression is well-designed. Shows a trophy of Brittany from Pikmin 3 in the Wii U version, while also deconfirming her being a playable character.

Color TV-Game 15.jpg
Pic of the day. The unexpected Assist Trophy, the TV-Game 15! Color TV-Game 15 is a home entertainment system that was released in 1977 in Japan before the release of Space Invaders. This is the oldest game to join the Smash Bros. series. Explains how a technical detail of the Color TV-Game 15 system was recreated in its Assist Trophy role.
Miiverse Icon.png
Normally, controllers for these types of games had knobs with variable resistors--these allowed the players to control in-game movement by how far they twisted the knobs. The TV-Game 15 used microswitches instead. We've worked a little too hard to reenact the behavior of the original, so the paddles always move in linear paths with the same, consistent speed. We pay attention to such peculiar details!
May 16, 2014
SSB4 - Female Villager.jpg
Pic of the day. You can choose to play as the girl villager too!! How lovely. Confirms that just like Wii Fit Trainer, there will be Male/Female versions of the Villager as well.
Miiverse Icon.png

SSB4 - Mac and Olimar.jpg
Pic of the day. Under certain circumstances, the creatures on this planet appear to grow larger and go berserk. The Pikmin and I must be cautious lest we lose our heads to these beasts.
Miiverse Icon.png
May 20, 2014
SSB4 - Assist Trophy.jpg
Pic of the day. This is the capsule for the Assist Trophies. It may emit rainbow-colored lights, or even blink. Even if there's something like a Color TV-Game 15 inside....
Miiverse Icon.png

SSB4 - Mirror Pose 01.jpg
Pic of the day. The leg and arm positions of some characters will automatically be mirrored when facing left or right. Mario, for example, will have his chest shown in the foreground regardless of whether he's facing right or left. This was quite a tedious task, but thanks to it we can show the best features of each character even better. Confirms that certain characters will stand facing the screen regardless of which direction they face, always giving players a full view of their front side. Also shows the first palette swap of Greninja.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 - Mirror Pose 02.jpg
Here's another example: in the previous games, you saw the back of Kirby's head when facing left. Now Kirby looks great from any angle.
May 22, 2014
SSB4 - Team Outlines.jpg
Pic of the day. In previous games in the series, if you chose the red team in a team battle, your Mario would have been red. But now you can choose any color you want! The color outlining the characters will show their team affiliation. Shows that characters' costume colors are no longer forced in Team Battles, in at least the 3DS version, and that colored outlines are used instead.
Miiverse Icon.png
May 23, 2014
SSB4 - Ike Reveal.jpg
Pic of the day. Ike, the swordsman of magnificent strength, joins the battle!! Strike your foes down with his powerful smash attacks. Confirms Ike's return as a playable character, this time using his design from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Sakurai also alludes that Ike will retain his extreme power.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 - Ike Reveal 2.jpg
For this game, Ike's design is based on the hero that appears in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. His sword deals heavy damage in Smash Bros., so this design suits him very well! Rest assured, he can use Aether as well.
May 26, 2014
SSB4 Revival Platforms.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's a look at the revival platforms. The color of the bottom mechanism changes from yellow to red to warn you how much time you have left before you drop into the fray. Confirms a new visual mechanic on revival platforms that shows how long players have before their platform disappears.
Miiverse Icon.png
May 27, 2014
SSB4 Ike Rocket Belt.jpg
Pic of the day. The rocket belt from Pilotwings lets you fly upward by jumping. This is a really useful item for characters that have weaker recoveries. By the way, is that cape fireproof? Confirms that the Rocket Belt is activated by jumping.
Miiverse Icon.png
May 28, 2014
SSB4 High Damage Steam.jpeg
Pic of the day. Characters that have heavy damage slowly start to emit steam. When your opponent starts to get nice and smoky, give 'em a solid attack! Confirms a new visual mechanic making it more obvious when a character has a large amount of damage.
Miiverse Icon.png
May 29, 2014
SSB4 Eruption.jpg
Pic of the day. You can charge up Ike's Eruption attack by holding the button down, but remember to release it right before it fully charges to avoid recoil damage. Let go of the button at the moment the sword shines! Confirms that Ike retains Eruption as a special move, as well as a new aesthetic effect that shows when the move has reached its full power before fully charging.
Miiverse Icon.png

SSB4 3DS Bottom Screen.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's a first look at the bottom-screen display for the Nintendo 3DS. Your name will appear in the area above the accumulated damage. And if you tap one of the fighter displays…! Gives the first look at the bottom screen in a standard match in the 3DS version of the game. Also confirms a new feature that allows you to place a marker around a chosen player to track them during the match.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 Targeting.jpg
…You can highlight that fighter on your screen. This is useful when you want to get back at a particular opponent. You can also highlight yourself if you need to keep better track of where you are. This is a great benefit to having your own individual screen.

SSB4 Super Mario Bros. U.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's a new Wii U stage, Mushroom Kingdom U! It brings to life the worlds of New Super Mario Bros. U. Confirms a new stage for the Wii U version based on New Super Mario Bros. U, with the aesthetic of that game's first world, Acorn Plains. Kamek, a recurring Mario antagonist, will be able to transform the stage into at least one variant, with the known one being based on the sixth world in NSMBU, Rock-Candy Mines.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 Super Mario Bros. U-2.jpg
When Kamek casts a spell, the stage transforms drastically! That said, this is not what you would call a moving stage…
…By the way, this stage will be playable in the demo version of the game for E3, a game expo that starts on June 10 in Los Angeles.
June 03, 2014
SSB4 Tortimer Island Trophy.jpg
Pic of the day. Some stages have been shrunk down and made into trophies, like this one of Tortimer Island for the 3DS version. I wish I could have a figurine like this in real life. Confirms that in at least the 3DS version, some stages will appear as trophies.

SSB4 Boomerang Item.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's a new item that we've thrown in--the boomerang. As you'd guess, it'll fly back into your hands after you throw it, and if you keep catching it, its attack power grows with each throw! However, opponents can nab the boomerang out of the air, so it might be an easier item to use in Smash Run. Gives details on how the new Boomerang item works.

SSB4 Town and City The Roost.jpg
Pic of the day. Brewster brings The Roost back to Smash Bros. Nothing beats watching a battle of famous fighters with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Confirms that events may take place in the background during fights in Town and City, similarly to Smashville.

SSB4 Fire Emblem Stage Wii U.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's Ike, Marth and…a brand-new stage! Confirms a new Fire Emblem stage for the Wii U version of the game.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 Coliseum.jpg
We've added a familiar setting from the Fire Emblem series, the Coliseum. In the original game, this place is filled with both hope and despair. There is machinery in the ground that activates variable platforms.

Meloetta SSB4.jpg
Pic of the day. Remember the video that introduced Greninja joining the battle? Every Pokémon that appeared in that video will make some kind of appearance in Super Smash Bros! By the way, here's one of the Pokémon that didn't make an appearance in that video--Meloetta. Its vocal attacks reflect off land forms, so they'll be especially effective in a closed environment. Confirms that every Pokémon in Greninja's reveal trailer will appear in the new games, though in what capacity they will appear is not stated. Whether they will appear as Poké Ball or Master Ball assist characters or will simply appear as collectibles like trophies was left ambiguous. Known Pokémon that appeared in that trailer that have not been seen in other footage or screenshots are Gardevoir, Giratina, Inkay, Kyogre, Oshawott, Togepi, Snivy, Suicune, Swirlix, and Zoroark. Interestingly, Sakurai remarks that Meloetta wasn't shown in Greninja's debut trailer, when one in fact can be briefly seen among the summoned Pokemon (between Deoxys and Keldeo).

SSB4 - Golden Plains 01.jpg
Pic of the day. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a game where you collect tons of coins. Thus, it's only natural that many coins will appear in this stage… Wait, is this really Super Smash Bros?? Confirms a new stage for the 3DS version based on New Super Mario Bros. 2. Also talks about the stage's exclusive gimmick of becoming a Gold Fighter, and the benefits that come with it. This is notably the first multiplayer stage shown to take advantage of each player having their own system for the 3DS version, done by showing the player's coin counter in the top left.
Miiverse Icon.png
SSB4 - Golden Plains 02.jpg
If you collect 100 coins, you transform into a gold fighter! For a short period of time, your attack power will increase and you won't flinch when you receive attacks. This unique stage's name is Golden Plains and it's exclusive to the 3DS version.

SSB4 Mii Fighter Screen-1.jpg
Posting at a not-so-typical time of the day.
An announcement has been made at E3: Mii Fighters are joining the battle!! "You can fight--anyone can fight!"
Confirms the arrival of two newcomers: Miis, which are divided into three separate classes (Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, and Mii Gunner), as well as Palutena. Sakurai also mentions that Palutena's attacks are based on powers from Kid Icarus Uprising.
Miiverse Icon.png
PotD Palutena comment.jpg
And Palutena is joining the battle! She's using a lot of powers in the video we released, but these are only a few of the powers featured in Kid Icarus: Uprising. For more details, check out the Super Smash Bros. official website.

For the first time ever, we will be holding a tournament using an in-development version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U! And you can watch the tournament live by visiting the website below!! Bear in mind, every participant will have little to no experience playing with the Wii U version...but what makes the Smash Bros. series really remarkable is the importance of improvisation over memorization. I'd like to stress that this is a work-in-progress version of the game, so please forgive us if we run into some issues. Posted with a link to the Invitational's website.

SSB3DS Home Run Contest.jpg
Pic of the day. The goddess is up to bat for the Home-run Contest, a returning mini-game on the 3DS version! It's been streamlined with added features here and there, like sturdier glass and doubled speed for long hits. You can also have fun comparing your rankings for this mini-game with your Global Smash Power. Shows a clear confirmation of the Home-Run Contest returning in the 3DS version, which was briefly seen in the E3 2014 Digital Event trailer two days prior. The post confirms a few tweaks that have been made to the mode, and that its scores will be among the "solo mode" scores used for Global Smash Power online rankings.

SSB4 - The Fantastic Classic Four.jpg
Pic of the day. This is quite a line-up of characters for the gaming world. I mean, it's amazing enough that Mario can fight Pikachu. I hope you enjoy this truly unique celebration!! Sakurai comments on the surreal feeling he gets from the fact that four classic gaming all stars are appearing in a game of his own creation.

SSB4 - Mii Swordfighter Specials.jpg
Pic of the day. Here are some weapons the Mii Swordfighter can use: Shurikens of Light, Chakrams, and Gale Strikes. You can control the direction the Chakram is thrown, or even make it stall in midair. The Chakram is also the only one of these tied to the side special move, so you can use one of the other items consecutively with this one. Shows off some of the Mii Swordfighter's special moves.

SSB4 Eggrobo Trophy 3DS.jpg

Trophy Rush.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's a new mini-game that's quite a bit different from Coin Launcher in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's called Trophy Rush! The details…will be kept secret for now. Confirms one of the modes seen the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS E3 trailer as Trophy Rush. No specific details are given, but Sakurai does compare it to the Coin Launcher from Brawl.

Pac-Man Bonus Fruit SSB4.jpg
Pic of the day. Pac-Man's standard special move, Bonus Fruit. As you charge this move, the bonuses will change, and all of them have different characteristics and movement patterns when thrown. The bonuses cycle in the same order as in the original game, and the charge-up period doubles once you cycle beyond the orange. Confirms Pac-Man's neutral special move as Bonus Fruit and gives details on how it works.
Miiverse Icon.png
June 20, 2014
Storm Punch.jpg
Pic of the day. Here's Donkey Kong's third standard special attack, Storm Punch!! Thanks to the customization options, each fighter is stocked with 12 different special moves. The number of attacks is pretty appalling. Confirms one of Donkey Kong's alternative Neutral Specials.
Miiverse Icon.png
We've made it so that customization options, including special attacks, will be disabled when you're playing online in With Anyone mode. After all, we have to think about game balance, and it's crucial for anonymous players to be able to use reliable tactics against one another. When you're playing in single player, battling with friends online, or playing locally, you're free to play however you want--with or without customization.

SSB4 - Size Mii Up.jpg
Pic of the day. Some of the physical characteristics of Miis get carried over when you use them as Mii Fighters. The smaller ones become speed fighters and the bigger ones are more akin to power fighters. Sakurai confirms that Miis will retain their different sizes as Mii Fighters. He also confirms that Miis' stats are different based on their size, with smaller Miis being faster and bigger Miis being stronger.

SSB4 Little Mac Sweatsuit.jpg
Pic of the day. The pink sweatshirt looks really cool on Little Mac, so you can use that outfit in this game… How can a pink sweatshirt look so cool? Sakurai confirms that more costumes have yet to be revealed.
Miiverse Icon.png
Looks like some of you noticed that this version of Little Mac wasn't shown at E3. There are many things, like Link's Skyward Sword tunic design I posted earlier, that haven't been revealed yet.

Fancy Gunner Suit.jpg
Pic of the day. The Mii Gunner in his suit. Looking sharp! The arm cannon's design will change depending on the outfit, but the attacks and projectiles will be the same. Sakurai confirms more costumes for the Mii Gunner and Rosalina. He also states that the Mii Gunner's blaster will change depending on the outfit.
