The Hammer Bro. (ハンマーブロス, Hammer Bros.), or Hammer Brother, is a common enemy found in the Super Mario series and is a member of the Koopa Troop.

Character description

The Hammer Bro. makes its first appearance in the original Super Mario Bros. and has appeared in most Super Mario platformers since then. In almost all its appearances, the Hammer Bro. attacks by jumping and throwing hammers at Mario, Luigi, or other characters. However, a few games have demonstrated that not all Hammer Bros. are enemies of the Mario Bros.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

A Hammer Bro. appears in Brawl as a helper which can be released from an Assist Trophy. It throws its hammers at its enemies and is invulnerable. It also appears as a common enemy in Adventure Mode, where it acts similar to its Assist Trophy role but can be hit by attacks and defeated. It appears as both a collectible trophy and sticker.

Trophy description

Hammer Bros.
A character who throws a seemingly endless stream of hammers. Hammer Bros. have also been known to jump every so often. Since they throw their hammers in a high arc, if you manage to get in close, the hammers can't hit you. Unlike Koopas and Buzzy Beetles, Hammer Bros. don't reduce to their shells when jumped on. As the name suggests, most Hammer Bros. are found in pairs.

Trophy Description

These elite trooper turtles usually appeared in pairs in Super Mario Bros., wearing helmets and chucking hammers at Mario. When summoned, they'll advance on the nearest opponent and lob hammers in a graceful arc. Sometimes they'll throw in a jump to mix things up.

Origin

Hammer Bros. first appeared in Super Mario Bros. They acted as an enemy that would throw hammers at the player. They also could jump onto platforms above them. Hammer Bros. have also appeared numerous times throughout the Mario series. In Brawl, Hammer Bros. appear as enemies in the Subspace Emissary, and in both Brawl and SSB4 as an Assist Trophy. They appear as enemies in Smash Run for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. They do the same things as they do in Super Mario Bros. by throwing hammers and jumping. Their design is based on the Hammer Bros.' appearance in more recent games.

Trivia

  • The Hammer Bro. trophy is the only Assist Trophy that can only be obtained by using a Trophy Stand on it, due to its appearance in The Subspace Emissary. It is also the only Assist Trophy to appear in The Subspace Emissary.
  • The HP bar and the Smash Bros. DOJO!! lack the period in the name of Hammer Bros.. In addition, one of the Tips in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS uses "Hammer Bro" as the singular form, while it uses "Hammer Bros." as the plural form.
