Mewtwo (ミュウツー, Mewtwo) will be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable character available in April 2015. It was confirmed to be a playable character during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct presentation on October 23rd, 2014. Its appearance in Super Smash Bros. 4 makes it the first character in all of the series to be downloadable after the game's release; it also makes it the second cut veteran to return for Super Smash Bros. 4, after Dr. Mario. Mewtwo was available as a free download to players who registered both the 3DS and Wii U versions of the game on Club Nintendo before March 31, 2015; however, Mewtwo will also be available to buy separately on April 28th, 2015.

On March 19th, 2015, Sakurai remarked that Mewtwo's development was "pretty much done" and that it would be released "pretty soon".

On April 1st, 2015, in a Nintendo Direct presentation, Mewtwo's release dates were announced to be April 15th, 2015 for players that registered both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4, and April 28th, 2015 for purchase otherwise.

Changes from Melee

As of this time, Mewtwo's moveset appears to be mostly the same as it was in Melee. Aside from a new neutral attack finisher like other characters and a Final Smash, its neutral attack, dash attack, up smash, down smash, neutral aerial, back aerial, down aerial, forward throw, up throw, and down throw all have similar animations as their Melee counterparts. Down aerial, however, seems significantly faster than its Melee counterpart. Mewtwo also retains all its special moves: Shadow Ball, Confusion, Teleport, and Disable, with known differences being that Confusion's projectile reflection can now damage opponents and that Teleport has increased startup lag.

Mewtwo's design was shown for both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. 4. Aesthetically, it has undergone various changes in its model much like the other playable Pokémon in SSB4; its proportions more closely resemble its appearance in the main Pokémon games (with a smaller head, lighter skin and more bulbous fingers). Its design was also revealed to have been completely different than its existing trophy.

As expected, Mewtwo now has a Final Smash, involving Mega Evolving into Mega Mewtwo Y and using Psystrike.

Trophy

While not playable at the release of the game, there is a trophy of Mewtwo in both versions. Upon its playable release, it is expected to receive trophies that match the format of other fighters (a pair of trophies that describe some of its attacks); it is currently unknown what will happen to the existing Mewtwo trophy.

Created from modified Mew DNA, Mewtwo was designed to be the ultimate Pokémon. It didn't take on any of Mew's kinder traits and only uses its intelligence to destroy its enemies. Or...so it seems. Perhaps it just feels frightened or even tormented, and that's why it lashes out. Whatever the reason, Mewtwo is not to be messed with.

Trivia

• Mewtwo's trophy has different features than the eventual design of it as a playable character, such as having smaller eyes, a shorter tail, and a lighter shade of purple for its midsection and tail. In turn, both its playable model and the trophy differ slightly from Mewtwo's model in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, which has larger and rounder eyes than either of the two (to match Mewtwo's official art by Ken Sugimori).
• Mewtwo is the only playable Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. 4 to not be the evolved form of another Pokémon.
• Mewtwo's introduction tagline is a reference to the first Pokémon movie. Mewtwo's trailer also shows it encountering Genesect, likely in reference to the sixteenth Pokémon movie.
• Mewtwo is currently the only Melee veteran to be a downloadable character.
• Mewtwo's pose in its official artwork closely resembles its pose in its Melee artwork.
• Despite being a veteran fighter, the list of updates on the official website marks Mewtwo as a new challenger.
