In Brawl, the Challenges made its debut as a way to show players the various ways to unlock trophies, music, characters, and other gameplay aspects. Upon completing a criteria in-game, the player is taken to the Challenges screen in order to show what they have accomplished, what they have unlocked, and, most importantly, what they can do afterward; upon clearing a box, the boxes, and their criteria, to the left and right of the cleared challenge, though their rewards are not immediately visible to the player until they complete those challenges. Brawl features 32 columns of 4 rows, There are 3 panels of Challenges in "Super Smash Bros. for 3DS" each with 7 columns of 5 rows, with a total of 105. The latter game also increases the number of challenges opened for each completed challenge, with boxes above and below the completed box also being exposed alongside the ones to the left and right of it. Cryptically, Masahiro Sakurai has also claimed that the Wii U's version of Challenges will be more challenging than the 3DS's version.

As to potentially prevent spoiling the game's unlockable content from players, some challenges do not immediately identify characters if they are required for completing the challenge. In these cases, the character's name is replaced with "????".

In order to assist players in completing the grid, the game occasionally rewards players with five Golden Hammers for some challenges. In the 3ds version 3 special Challenges on each panel award you with a Golden Hammer to use on that panel only. These items can be used to break any challenge box, as well as customarily exposing the challenges next to the box. Some boxes, particularly those involving plot elements in the Subspace Emissary, are unable to be broken by the Golden Hammers, though this applies only to the NTSC region; the PAL release of the game allows any box to be broken open.
