Fobbling is an exploitive technique found in Project M 2.5 and above. When version 2.5 of Project M was released, the fan-made modification of Super Smash Bros. Brawl implemented a rebuilt knockback stacking code. This code was added into Project M to force the knockback to stack as it did in Super Smash Bros. Melee. This new knockback addition can easily be exploited with multiple character's moves.

Multiple characters in Project M having multiple active hitboxes on their moves (Jigglypuff's Down air or Luigi's Dash attack are two examples). These hitboxes appear and disappear rapidly to produce damage and knockback to opponents. In Project M, Ness has a move with multiple hitboxes known as PK Fire. By exploiting the move's multiple hitboxes, players can cancel knockback from moves that weren't intended to be canceled. This is known simply as 'Fobbling'.

Ness players in Project M can use Fobbling to their advantage by using another move after PK Fire has connected with the opponent and engulfed them in flames. If a move such as Ness' side Smash attack, 'Cracked Bat Blow' is connected with the flaming opponent in less than 10 frames before one of PK Fire's repeating hitboxes is applied, the knockback from Ness' 'Cracked Bat Blow' is completely canceled but the damage is still applied in percentage as per normal. This technique gives the Ness player extra damage on their opponent and let's them get in another move - whether it be another Smash Attack or a grab.
