Shield grabbing is the ability that most characters have of being able to grab out of a shield directly, that is, without the cooldown delay after letting go of shield. Because the game registers a grab as being a shield and an attack at the same time, if one presses an attack button on any controller while in a shield, they will perform a grab. Pressing a controller's grab button will also work here. This is a very basic defensive manuver with many ways around it, not in the least of which are cross-ups and/or shffls. However, it is still effective when used in the right situation; certain characters grabs are so good, it is often worth the attempt, even if it fails. In competitive play, shield grabbing is most often used after shielding a high-lag attack.

Yoshi cannot shield grab in Melee, but can in the original SSB.
