Bonkers (ボンカース) is a large gorilla-like sub-boss from the Kirby series that first appeared in Kirby's Adventure. He attacks by using his giant hammer and throwing coconuts. Kirby can swallow Bonkers to copy the Hammer ability. In Kirby Super Star and its remake Kirby Super Star Ultra, Bonkers is one of the enemies that can help Kirby.

Bonkers also appeared in one episode of the anime Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, where he works in a circus. He is a fan of Kirby and went after him to train, becoming his friend. While Bonkers was in Dream Land, King Dedede tried to make him fight against Kirby by turning him into a monster, but later he returned to normal. Bonkers left the town in the end of the episode.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Bonkers appears as both a trophy and a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Trophy Description

A large enemy who wields a giant hammer as a weapon. Bonkers battles you with several moves -- his hammer attack and coconut throw could be considered his specialties. Kirby can inhale Bonkers to learn Hammer and Smash techniques. Not many know this, but Hammer Kirby can also break walls and pound down stakes.

  • Kirby's Adventure
  • Kirby: Squeak Squad

Hacking

Hacking of the enemies file package of the Brawl disc has revealed data that appears to have been made for Bonkers, suggesting that he was planned to be included in the Subspace Emissary as an enemy.

Error

His trophy description says that Kirby could get the Smash ability by inhaling Bonkers. This is not correct, as Bonkers only gives Hammer. Smash can only be obtained by inhaling Master Hand in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, which is quite fitting as the ability is a scaled-down version of Kirby's Melee moveset (even including Hammer), and Master Hand originated in the Smash series.
