A character matchup is a measure of how even a fight is between two characters in a tournament setting.

The chart offers several interesting analyses about the dynamics of the game and is also open to a variety of interpretations; players may use the chart to further their chances of tournament success by using it as a guideline for what matches to avoid, or as a constructive tool indicating how much they will have to improve a given character in order to overcome a difficult counterpick.

Below is the current matchup chart for Super Smash Bros. Melee as of December 23rd, 2010. Due to the chart's age, it does not properly represent shifts and innovations in the metagame since it was made, so characters who have risen since previous iterations of the tier list, such as Pikachu and Yoshi may have weaker matchup spreads shown than what is currently accurate. Additionally, characters who have had more weaknesses exposed since then, such as Ganondorf, may have stronger spreads shown than what is accurate.

Chart[edit]

  • Note that although this is the current matchup chart as of 2010, it is subject to change with the meta. Therefore it is not necessarily the contemporary opinion of SSBM matchups this year; this is most apparent with characters such as Pikachu and Yoshi, who have become significantly more prominent in the meta since then.

To view matchup spreads, the character chosen on the left column will be matched with the enemy chosen on the top row.
