It appears as red lips on the ground: if the player goes near it, it will pop up and attempt to stick to the character. Walking over it makes it likely to stick to the player, though this can be avoided by jumping over it or getting close enough to trigger it and preempt an attack, and most characters can run over it as well. When they jump out, they have a deceptively long-lasting hitbox, with decent reach above them, especially in later levels, so the player must jump clean over them. Once stuck, Bucculus will attack by kissing the player repeatedly to deal damage, filling up its "poison zone".

If a Bucculus misses its grab attack, it will bounce around and plant itself again after a few seconds. If a Bucculus with a filled poison zone is killed, it will most likely drop a [[Maxim Tomato]], but it could occasionally drop [[Food]] otherwise. The player does not need to weaken an "empty" Bucculus to turn it into a [[trophy]] with a [[trophy stand]], since its base health is always very low (even on Intense).
